When I was in school my memory for memorizing poems was probably under average. Fast forward: today I am 80 3 1/2 years ago I became a Freemason. I have really worked on memorizing Ritual stuff. In this time I have probably memorized 2000 or so works. So it is better than it used to be.

I purchased a book the other day: "Moonwalking with Einstein" by Joshua Foer. He is among the top couple in the world. There are world series of memorizing events. This guy says before he started training he said his memory was average at best. He said this is a common thing. So anyways I am reading the book. We'llk see if I can get noticably better.
 
I find sufficient sleep and remembering to eat a proper meal to be the things that help my memory the most. Although with adhd often neither of those things happen.
 
I am 75 years old. My memory and forgetfulness have been sliding for 15 years.. Without my parents' photo albums I really cannot remember my teenage years. The last 32 yrs of my career I was a Class A CDL driver. My last driving job was at night (2010-14). I struggled with the new LED lights; seems that most drivers drive with their high beams at night. I now know that it was my cataracts was causing the night eye problem.
I had a "halo" effect in my left eye in 2018 watching fireworks. The VA doctor said that my "jell" was pulling away from the retina and my right eye would follow. The last VA doctor I saw, I saw-3, said I had cataracts in my left eye and I would need surgery in 5 years (2023). I never had surgery.
I started with Almond Butter in 2020. I traveled during the pandemic and this was my breakfast. The only place I can find it is at Sam's Club. It is roasted dry Almonds and a little salt. I consume about 2-tablespoons a day, usually with a banana. Almonds contains lots of Vitamin E. Almond oil is one of the good fats for our brains, too.
This year, I read that Butter, I use organic, helps my bone marrow produce new T-cells to repair problems. Adding about 1-tablespoon of butter a day has really helped my eyesight and my memory is coming back. No doctor wants to talk about natural products or vitamins.
I got a letter from the VA and they want me to join a trial using a statin drug to see if it will help with dementia. That is crazy. Dementia is a side effect of taking a statin drug. I made copies for RFKJr.
I do not take the Covid-jabs; now this. No thanks.

There are a number of products that are known to improve memory and cognitive function. The supplement Huperzine A is an acetylcholine inhibitor, known to improve muscle function in people like me, with deficits in the neuromuscular interface. That same capability works cognitively too. In fact there are effective prescription drugs using the very same compounds. Both for dementia and for Myasthenia Gravis neuromuscular function. The interesting thing is that in normal doses there are no significant side effects or downsides.

The peptide world also has a few compounds that are well known to improve cognitive function. I know of one person who became a star employee, with raise, bonus and positional changes due to peptides. Semax is strongly associated with cognitive enhancement, focus, memory, learning, and neuroprotection. Pinealon is another brain specific peptide. While I don't use either, I do use a peptide for my health issues and it has been a godsend.

Statins have a stigma associated with them, and there is sufficient evidence they can be protective. However Spacedoc.com (Duane Graveline) NASA doctor who experienced side effects, did a great job pointing out the downsides with regard to cognitive function and mitochondrial dysfunction. Over time it has become known that there are certain populations and types of people who benefit. Others who suffer.

I have terrible memory. I always attributed it to some sort of ADHD. I can tell you how much pinion and carrier shims I used when I rebuilt the differentials in the Jeep a few years ago ... but if I need to stop by the store to get bread on the way home from work there's no chance of me remembering.

I do eat well but I don't sleep a lot and consume stuff that's known to cause bad short term memory.

Online sources like nextgen peptides, grey axis research or thepeplair will sell research grade peptides. While not FDA approved, they are in common use and approved elsewhere. In Russia for example Semax has been used for stroke recovery since the 1980's with great results. And the others from the 1990's. Literally decades of approved use.

I'm using Retatrutide GLP3 for my metabolism issues. The vast majority of my labs went from 'Danger Red' to green within 3 months! Autoimmune inflammation nearly gone. Amazing stuff. I am at or very near my goal weight, so I must be careful not to drive my weight lower. Dose adjustment is part of the game here. But the kidney, liver and heart function are all remarkably better. Creatinine levels went from awful to perfect. Same with liver enzymes. But best of all, A1c is down from pre-diabetes well into the green zone.

I take Huperzine-A for muscle failure. Works amazingly well for that, and in about 30 minutes I can go from unable to walk properly, to near normal. No question it helps cognitive function too. I make no claims to be a mental giant (IQ-99 is my claim) so any improvement there is welcome.
 
Memory is a funny thing.

I have ALWAYS been terrible at memorizing facts. Give me a list of random facts with no context and I won't remember them in 5 mins.

I am known amongst my colleagues, friends and family as having an excellent memory, especially for things I learned in school. Give me something that is part of a process that I can visualize and I'll remember it for the rest of my life.

I never forget a face or a story someone tells me but their name? Gone before I finish saying hello.

So, I can draw an SN2 reaction from organic chemistry and I can probably rattle off the compliment cleavage cascade from immunology from 25 years ago, but I can't remember a list of 5 numbers more than a few mins, and I won't remember your name until we've met at least 5x.

I do find 10mg of creatine daily seems to keep my mind sharper and let me push past the last few reps of a lifting set.
 
I've been a bit bad with spoken words since birth. Yeah I know hard to believe. Nouns and names. My memory has not gone down too much, but intermingling trying to think of a name with old age and the woman yelling at me to remember can be........difficult. So actually I am working improving at near 68! I never forget where I put things. 10mm sockets not a problem. I remember a ton of (odd) facts. The Grignard, the SN2 - wow cheese organic chemistry was 1978! But I have forgotten a lot of trig that I never used (easily looked up though)

The name of a place (a place that I can easily picture in my mind) or a name of a person out of context (I saw my favorite beef seller at her kids baseball game, could not remember her name!) These are challenging for me!

My increased blood glucose control and increasing my insulin sensitivity has helped. There are common factors here. Gut health, blood flow, proper lipid balance and control are great for the brain.

Weight classes (Pump and Strength and Stretch)
Aerobic classes (Pump and Strength and Stretch)
Yoga
Static presses
Pickleball - not slow old kind, but fast twitch reaction kind. Someday I amaze myself, other days I'm garbageball. 2 hours and I'm done, my play really drops off
Walking 1-2 day with dogs, vigorous and moderate mixed
Since I'm addicted to devices, I never sit for more than 20-30 minutes, get up, even if inappropriate stretches while watching TV, jump around

What mental exercises?

Pray and read
Volunteer tutor with a couple high school boys (some are VERY challenging)
Solve mental/word puzzles
Play word games
Meet new people
Learn new stuff
Do a math problem
Learn vocabulary words


No I don't do all these the same day, but through the week, I make a good attempt get them all in.
