It's like a dirty joke that started back in the 40's and the great grandkids are still telling it today. The Pennzoil rumor will be here 60 years from now if we still have oil.

strombony, you have used Pennzoil for years, ever had a sludge problem? Maybe you should set the trend and your friends do what you do.

But, if you decide to use the Valvoline or Havoline more power to you, I'm sure it will work just fine. But, I cannot answer PM's about either because I have never used them (and never will) and I have never worked for either or have any connections with either.

It's just oil, sleep well at night.

I heard the Quaker State sludge story from some old guy at the parts store yesterday. It's alive and kicking too.

Yes, don't use Pennzoil Conventional. I heard it will not only clog up your engine, but it is absorbed through your skin and will sludge up your arteries too!

The guys are right^^.
But you will never feel 100% happy with Pennzoil now, no matter what the arguments are for it - the seeds of doubt will remain.
So in your case, use something else.

I think the Pennzoil=sludge myth really gained new life with the advent of the internet. I used Pennzoil for many years before I got on the internet (and learned for the first time of the Sludge!) and I continued using it for many years afterward, all with excellent results... And no sludge!

Back when your father was a young man Fram did make a good filter. Now all they make is cheap junk for filters. Back when I was a little kid Quaker State oil used to sludge up engines that were only used for short trips or never had their oil changed enough. They have reformulated their oils a long time ago. Times change and so does product quality. Sometimes it changes for the better and sometimes it changes for the worse. My dad used to own an auto parts store and the only oil people would buy was Pennzoil. He couldn't give away anything else.

Then don't use it----. It's OK if it's not rational. I still don't use the yellow bottle. Hated it back in the 70s when I was learning how to work on cars. I see no reason to buy it today when there are other choices even though it's not the same below average product it was back in the day. It would just bug me to have it in my vehicles, so I don't use it.

My dad and I would come home with a case of Chryco (Mopar) from the dealership every once in a while. He would dump it into his New Yorker engines.

When I got my Neon last summer it had been given a steady diet of Mopar oil, but I decided I wanted to try something different. Given the reports around here I went with Pennzoil conventional. No sludge yet... maybe I should stretch out my OCI to 20,000 miles and put chewing gum in the PCV?

Speaking of Chryco oil... I see someone on Ebay has 1 quart of the stuff with a current bid of $13.39. Darn, should have keep a case or two of that.
