I have some leftover Belgium Castrol 0W40 SN ACEA A3/B4. The old stuff before they changed over to FST and moved production to Germany. How well would it clean sludge compared to something like Pennzoil conventional / PP? I know that no special oil is going to clean sludge overnight and will take time.

Just trying to decide what to use in the sludger next. I don't mind spending the extra $5-10 since I already have it.

Does anyone have the VOA of it? I think I found it but I could be looking at the FST one.

I hope SOMEBODY doesn't say Brand 1 is better than Brand 2 or that I should be using Brand 3 instead because Brand 1 and 2 are no good. You know... that guy.

It's quality oil which you already have on hand. Unless you have something else to use it up in, just run it regardless of how well it may or may not clean your sludged engine.

Pennzoil products are not bottles of solvent disguised as motor oil like many here seem to believe.

Depends on the degree of sludge and the engine?

Generally, as said above, no oil is going to clean sludge.
You may need to flush it with solvent and do frequent oil changes which means cheap oil.
Figure out why it is sludging in the first place, is there any maintenance part to be changed.

I had a cleaning with an old ELF 0w30. Maybe a sludged engine in thick oils can be cleaned with a thinner oil. But a sludged already in thinner, won't. That, If the sludge source comes from heat/smashed sheared VII's, as most thicker users depares with.

Elf 0w30 wouldn't be what I would consider thin. Even after an engine using lets say 10w40's it's whole life.

Cleaning sludge with just other motor oil dumped in the sump would take tens and tens of thousands of miles. The difference would be neglible between a typical OCI if any.

I dunno if you can get BG products over there ... But they have some that work nicely. BG109 (now known as EPR) is a decent cleaner and it will break down sludge over time. I toss a can in with each oil change on an older or high mileage motor. After 4 or 5 oil changes things are much better
