'm trying to find out if my transmission is in a healthy state. I have a transmission oil leak, nothing major the tranny cooler lines are seeping tranny oil. I have been keeping on the fluid and the leak until I can get enough money to get it repaired. The fluid is where it should be. Eversince I noticed the leak I started reading up on how to take care of my transmission. I read an article that caught my attention and it was about transmission slippage.

Alittle back I remembered that I was on the highway and it was raining bad and I noticed I was stepping on the gas and the rpms were going high at about 4000 and it wasnt going any faster, I wasn't giving it more gas because it sounded like I was straining the engine already. I was going about 40 mph, which I guess it's 2nd gear going into 3rd. That caught my attention that day but I forgot about it because it never did it again, as far as I noticed, this was the only time it did it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but gears shift from 2000 to 2200 rpms for low gear and 2500 to 3000 for higher gears. Recently I have been checking the fluid and smelling it and everything is fine it doesn't smell burnt or look funny.

Now for the is this a Jeep thing? Ever since I bought the JC Laredo 4.7 V8 I noticed that while going from park to drive or drive to reverse or vice versa sometimes the jeep Jumps or Jerks somewhat, just me stepping on the brakes and going through the shifter not going anywhere. I had a mechanic tell me that Jeeps are known for this. I wanted to know if this was normal and any other thoughts you might have on transmissions.

engagement harshness is a fluid pressure issue. Typically it is too high because the regulator is stuck or the trans is in a 'limp mode'.

Any codes to read? MIL lit? Year?

Have you ever been in deep water?

Need a whole lot more to try and help.

The only code that I've received recently was a u1411 after the CEL light came on..which is implausible fuel volume signal, since then the CEL light went off and I even forgot about it haven't had any problems though. The harsh engagements have been happening Eversince I got the Jeep 7 months ago and it doesn't happen sll the time, it used to be worse before I replaced a defective tps sensor, I'd be on the gas after a stop the Jeep wouldn't move for a few seconds then it used to either shoot forward or backwards, I thought this was a transmission problem but it threw a cel light on the tps sensor and when it was replaced it didn't do it anymore. I have 2005 Jeep GC V8, the only deep water I've been in Is with my wife, lol, but that's another story, umm anything else you need to know just let Me Know I'm trying to get to the bottom of this without mechanics telling me I gotta get things I don't really need.
Oh yeah When I got the Jeep I took it into a mechanic to get a transmission oil change I found out later that he didn't use Atf4 instead another one called cam2" which is supposed to be compatable" tell you the truth I don't know if he changed the filter. I'm waiting until the weather gets warm again prob in springtime do I can the fluid changes on my own. Hopefully everything I'd great at that time.thanx for your thoughts.

I know it won't make much of a difference but this one adds Atf3 and 4. I know universal fluids aren't the answer but with a carnote and insurance to pay and rent I had to get this.

Even though it wasn't a solution it was better than leaving the older oil it had inside, I don't know what could have been. I'm just waiting for tax season to get stuff taken care of. If it will hold until it gets warmer I learn and do the transmission oil myself so I know exactly what's going in there. Do you recommend a flush or can I just drain and refill then wait like 3 months and do it again so I can dilute whatever is in there and eventually get everything out. Because I've heard some mixed reviews on flushing the tranny.

Buy some +4 from advance, do it while the coupons still work.

Even if you don't get it in there, you'll have it on hand to give your mechanic.

Advance is closing the ATF/ coupon window, so get in there and spend $30. Frankly if you can come up with gasoline for a jeep you can maintain it.

I have my car in the shop now, an they are going to be working on the tranny cooler lines, would it be advisable for me to tell them to just drain the transmission oil and fill up with Arf4 I'm about to buy, or is it more advisable to get a flush since it had the cam2 universal fluid. I've read a lot of things against transmission flushes. I really want to know if he can just drain and refill then I'll wait a few weeks drain and refill again until the old fluid gets diluted and then do it again a few weeks after that eventually to.where very little or no old fluid is left.

Don't be afraid of a typical passive machine. I have never seen any shop in my area use anything else. It's simply two reservoirs, your trans pump does the work and all fluid flows the same way it does in normal operation.

You still need periodic filter changes no matter what.

I would definitely go for a flush to try to get as much of the correct fluid in there as possible. It should not hurt anything. My roommate recently had the original ATF in his 3.7 Liberty flushed at 186K miles at the Dodge dealer...huge improvement.

ATF+4 is not "anti-dexron" kryptonite, it just has a different friction modifier action. A "little" of the old won't hurt things after a good flush.

The generic dex plus modifier they put in initially is ghetto, as a small thing of modifier will work poorly on a large volume of fluid meant to do something else.
