I think the CX-30 is the right thing to do for Mazda with cuvs and suvs getting all the sales nowadays. And your avoiding CD is very wise. Good luck with your new car!

Please provide a detailed update once you have some miles on it. Would like to see some more interior pics and critiques of surfaces, controls...etc.

Seriously though, it sounds like you put some thought into what you did and didn't want. I'm not really surprised about the divestiture of the Frontier, I think you knew getting into it that the fuel economy was going to be bad, but it's one thing knowing it, it is quite another experiencing it.

haha Likely Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20 or Mobil 1 Annual Protection 0w20 for (2) reasons - SA of .8 and a Noack of 10%. Good for GDI engines. I ran nothing but EP 0w20 on my last Mazda 3 and it ran like new when I sold it 5 years later with 63k miles on it.
I use Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 in my cx5 for those reasons. It's a good oil. Its universally available. Its cheap.

I'll likely get a used Frontier at some point, or some other used 4WD vehicle for off-road use. It feels good to be back in a small car that doesn't drink gas.
I'd consider Modern Engine too just out of curiosity but I think Mobil 1 has them all beat in terms of availability, price and performance. The only boutique oil I'd consider in any GDI engine is Driven's GDI oils which have an even lower SA of .7.

Mazda, like many other automakers makes continuous improvements. This means new stuff all the time.
Yours has a new AWD system.
Mine had the updated interior from the year before along with redesigned pistons and rings, GVC, offset crank, and a bunch of other things.

I didn't know that. What was the reason for redesigned pistons and rings? That was for 2017?
They redesigned the piston edge to reduce hot spots and did a little bit on the crown from what I understand. The 17 got a new ring pack which included a very thin oil control ring. I saw a Dave Coleman video on it but have had trouble finding that again.
18 of course brought cylinder deactivation and they updated GVC to Plus.

Very interesting. All the Mazdas I have had (2007, 2014 and 2015) never burned a noticeable drop of oil. I attribute that to the type of rings Mazda uses. Have there been any reported any oil consumption issues since they changed the rings?

Good for you. Drive what you like! Someone is going to get a heck of a nice pre-owned top of line Frontier. You had that engine bay prettier than when it rolled off the factory floor IIRC.
