I saw this thread on City-Data.com so I thought I would ask it here.

If we hit another recession in the next year or so, do you think your job is safe ?
If so, what makes you think so ?

I know I'm kind of lucky in that my line of work has a very diverse customer base. Everything from steel manufacturing, medical, food/beverage to petro-chem buys our products. Typically if one falls off a bit, another will carry us.

Even so, if upper management deemed it appropriate, my 15yrs of service could go bye-bye in an instant.

I'm in school to become a science teacher. Given our country's historical attitude toward education and its recent attitude toward science, I laugh at the idea of job security.

I have a friend that's in his 4th year without a job. His recession gets worse every month.

Unless middle class America starts buying the recession will continue to erase jobs without stopping. I'm afraid our engine (employed middle class folks) has died. The post war boom is over. We just need to wait for the next tech boom. Hopefully, it will happen in America.

good on ya, i am considering the same. (been beaten up on here about wanting to switch careers, save ione person who gave me some good advice).

As for my current job, yeah, another recession would force me to move to the next bigger town down the coast. things are already a bit shaky and quiet.

even considering doing a bit of security maybe?? maybe I'm crazy

A higher percentage of the whole American population thinks the whole universe is younger than glue.

Mine isn't.

I hope. Not many folks in my field want to do my job in my geographical area, so that's a plus. Entry to the field is also expensive in time/money, with schooling/certifications/licensure/dues needed before one can compete for a job.

There are certain things that would make my job certainty history, but that's delving into too much politics.

Until they tamed'em. Then they rode them into the sunset.

This statistic is probably true of most americans, since the Texas population is mostly made up people from other states.

Were not entering another recession, based on what? Irrational silly fear? Unlike in 2008 companies are loaded down with cash, this is nothing like 2008.

The markets are going through a bit of turmoil, it will end in a couple of weeks. Its based on irrational nothingness, so like most irrational nothingness it will get old and go away after awhile.

Now is a really good time to pump every cent you can into the market, stocks are on sale. Hedge fund guys are loving this come end of the year bonus time they will get a nice check because of all this. I think Mercedes, BMW, and Porsche dealers in my area are going to do a banner business come November.

Well than your friend needs to get some training to get into another field. Clearly their are other issues at work here.

The economic reports that keep coming out really suggest that we never came out of the recession. There have been a couple of highs in the economy, compared to what things have been like but as a whole, the economy is not doing any better.

We hear one day that this or that indicator is up while at the same time, another report comes out the next day that says the opposite. It seems that the media is trying its best to make things look good but the actual information comes out and shows the opposite.

It is hard to try and make things look real good when those that are out of work or under employed are having hard times, these people know that they are out of work or making less and you cant tell them they are doing better.

You also cant tell anyone that actually looks at what is going on around them that they are better off when they arent.they see what is going on,they know what is happening. You cant tell them things are good when they arent.

The post war boom and tech boom are still intact. In China that is. When China was admitted to WTO (despite lack of democracy), no one probably could predict how "well" that would work.

The markets tumbled because economy stopped growing and started contracting and not because "irrational silly fear."

While there could be rebound coming soon, long term picture is not rosy. Certainly the structural problems in economy (high commodity prices, unhealthy banking, consumers cutting on spending) are as present now as they were present in 2008.

The 2009-2010 "recovery" (limited to Wall Str BTW) was an illusion produced by coordinated central banks and governments interventions unmatched in history. Now that ammunition is spent (more government deficit anyone?), we will see if it really worked.

So far so good, the smart phone wars between Google and Apple is forcing everyone into the arm race here and somewhat shield me from unemployment for the next couple of years. Beyond that, all bets are off.

If I were still in my old industry (semiconductor equipment) then I would have been royally screwed.
