Looks like my Dakota probably needs a new idle air control. It looks like I can get:

Master Pro: $30.99 from Oriely
BWD: $43.29 from advance or $53.99 from Oriely
Duralast $30.99 from autozone
Various $39.57 to $75.53 from NAPA
Unknown brand $74.00 from autotech

Thoughts or recommendations?

Yeah I've tried quite a bit of cleaning actually. The symptom is when the engine is warm, then stopped for a few minutes, then started. It will start but immediately die. After this the only way to start it is to "give it some gas" and keep giving it gas for a about 30 seconds and them it'll stay running. Also after the truck is hot it tends to idle really low like 500RPM. I've cleaned the throttle plate and Idle air control several times with BG throttle body clean. Each time the situation improves for a while, we'll say a few weeks up to even two months. Then it returns. It's now beginning to (sometimes) exhibit the hard to start symptom even when the engine is cold.

I think I replaced mine with a BWD after I broke it by accident when cleaning it. When replacing it you may have to step on the gas to get it started if it's too far in the close position until the pcm picks up where it needs to position it. I can't remember if I had to reset the pcm or not.

There should be a code thrown for a faulty IAC motor with the severe symptoms that you describe.
It does sounds like it is a faulty air control, but there should be a code.

Well replaced the idle air control today. Decided to go with the BWD from advance. Seems to have improved the situation drastically. It's idling better than it ever has since I got the truck. It's always been a little sluggish on the acceleration but that problem seems to have gone away too. it also seems to have improved something else that was totally unexpected. The trucks always been a bit sluggish about up shifting, always seemed to wanna stay in the lower gear longer than it should.... strangely that issue seems to have gone away too.
