2003 Honda S2000, 9000 RPM redline, it sees 7 or 8000 RPMs every so often, 4 and 5000 regularly. 80,000 miles, Valvoline Conventional 10w30 and mobil 1 filter. Wifes car, but when my son or I drive it, we work it. 1987 Ram 318, 4x4, 4 speed work truck, start and stop all day in Memphis heat and humidity. Any 10w30 and filter I have is what it gets. Also, 1959 Chevy Apache 283, 300 HP, Muncie 4 speed, driven hard, 3 or 4 days a wk. I have been reading here for a while so I thought I would join and ask for your recommendations. Thanks a lot for any advice on oil and filter. Travis. Great site.

IF you are trying to 'simplify' you oil choice to one, I'd say that a 10w30 HDEO would well for ALL those engines - Rotella 10w30, Pennzoil LL 10w30, Motorcraft 10w30 HDEO would be some ideas.

IF you wanted to go synthetic and don't mid ordering Amsoil, I'd go with ACD 30 weight for all.

Just my $.02!

:D

All options are open. I do not mind paying a little more. One oil or 3 different, does not matter. Just looking for advice from some guys that are smarter than me (which means most people here I would guess). Thanks for your comment.

If different oils are an option, I will get a bit more specific with my recs:

If it were me, I'd be inclined to use a synthetic in the S2000. I know it's run fine on Valvoline 10w30 so far, but in something THAT high-revving, I'd just be more comfortable with a synthetic. Any 10w30 synthetic would be a good choice.

For BOTH The Ram 318 and the Apache, I'd use a 15w40 HDEO. If they are worked hard in the heat, the extra visc. won't hurt them. Take your pick of which one, they are all good. Or, if you want to spend a bit more, Rotella 'T' synthetic 5W-40 is an EXCELLENT all-round oil - inexpensive, and great protection.

obviously you can run 10w30 in all of them - and its pretty much your choice on whether to use conventional or synthetic. the 318 is pretty forgiving of abuse - although I have seen two late model 318's sludge up from extended OCI's.

so... if money is no concern, or you simply want the best, run M1 or PP in all of them - especially the Honda (its the most expensive engine to replace. )

if you lived further north, I would run a euro 5W40 in the honda.. but thats not a problem for you in TN.

Thanks guys. I got the 318, 145000 miles from construction friend. It does not drip or use oil, but when I change oil and refill, looking in fill hole in valve cover, it looks a little caked up in there. Also, the Honda looks like new on the rockers that I can see. The 283 was a pro rebuild with tight tolerances. The Honda is an absolute race car. It begs to be hammered. One more thing, is there a place where I can see a list of all the acronyms? For example; PP? Sorry if it is obvious. Thanks, Travis.

You don't want to lose any of the free-revvingness of the Honda, so I'd stay in a x-30, and no 40 weight. M1 or PP or whatever.

In the dirty engine rotella sounds great. I'd probably use it in both but I know little about anything pre-90's.

You got the right filter. Just get the 5 quart jug of PP at Walmart for $20. Use the spec'd weight,or,the weights you are running. The syn will flow better and run cooler.

Thanks a lot for the response. I think I have what I need. I can not believe I left the family car off the list; 1997 Lincoln Town Car 4.6, 75000 miles, 95% highway miles(love vacations). I assume ya'lls suggestions will be the same for that one. By the way, would anybody clean the 318 or just keep going with reg. OCI's?

If I personally seen any caking in my engine, I would want to give it a little help in getting cleaned out.

Thanks for the comments. Would any one have a suggestion on cleaning the 318, if I choose to do it?

Mobil 1 10w30 "high mileage" would be the perfect oil for all three vehicles, IMO.

High zinc content (anti-wear), seal conditioners for the older vehicles, and ACEA A3... rated for long drain intervals, which indicates a quality base stock & strong additive package.

Especially at $22 for 5qts of the M1, the PP hardly seems like a deal anymore.

I like to use a little sea foam towards the end of an OCI.
Alot of people here like the auto rx. Marvel mystery oil will also help, or my dad's old trick he swears by...a little kerosene.

Thanks. I have never tried to clean an engine, so I will post my results when I do. Still have not picked how.
