The dipstick level will show about a pint or so on the high side when the vehicle sits for more than a couple of hours (and, no, it has NOT been overfilled!). The single ounce/1000 mile topoff of LC20 cannot possibly affect the reading so drastically...

It does have me wondering, though. Nonetheless, I will still probably buy Wix filters.

Will a 51344 even hold a pint?

Who'se buying pints? Make mine Stella Artois

Didn't know dipsticks measure marks for pints... but then again I don't own a Honda.

Back to the original "out of square" discussion.

Most all filter manufacturers use the thread pitch diameter that the OE uses. For example, all GM filter threads are 0.010" oversize. This was started over 40 years ago when they had problems getting the studs straight in the engine everytime. This practice continues today on their 18mm and 13/16 threads.

Ford is 0.004" oversize. Chrysler is normally 0.000" over. Most imports are 0.000 over. High performance filters (high burst, Mobil 1, etc.) are normally not oversize.

The objective is to have 360 degree gasket contact before any gasket compression starts.

Wix, Puro, Fram and Champ all use high speed tappers. When you tap 3 to 5 million base plates a week, one or two might slip by.

I don't work for Wix but I do admire their performance and consistantcy. You could never go wrong with NAPA Gold or Wix.

I presently use Wix filters, #'s 51348, 51394, 51372, 51040, 51356, and 51016.

Never had a problem with any of them. But sh*t happens, i guess.

speedtc,

Been installing filters professionally for 30 years, up untill recent change to Champ I've allways used Purolator and Motorcraft. In this area seems Ford owners tend to want OE filters. GM folks don't seem to care.

Have had Puro's and MC's with no gasket, and/or NO THREADS! Seldom sell or use Wix (too high) but would be glad to use them on personal rides. Use enough MC/Puro and you will see defects,, What brand then?

Bob

None of the filter companies are perfect. Much like poster speedtc, once I get burnt, I never buy it again. I just threw six brand new cheaper Baldwins in the garbage for bad ADBVs and/or bypasses. I won't send them back by mail for an exchange. Some folks swear by their Baldwins -- I swear at them. Once they lose my trust, I don't want to see them again on my vehicles.

So far I love Wix/Napa/AC DElco & Motorcraft. But tomorrow is another day & life is full of success & failures. All subject to change -- just like the wind.

I edited my first post twice. I must have done something wrong to make the same post appear 3 times instead of only once with the editing changes. Sorry about that. I didn't realize the post appeared 3 times.

What happened is that (at least) one time when you went for the

you hit the

thingy instead. It happens to me ..but I usually catch it.

I had a leaky Wix on my IH tractor. Pitched it and installed another. Fecalmatter occurs! Was more concerned with getting my moola back for the defective filter than letter-bombing Wix.

A leaky filter is a lot more serious than loose threads. Presumably, the filter could be properly tightened and didn't leak? If so, no worries.

It wasn't loose threads. I'm not going to pay for a filter that is manufactured wrong. I went through 2 of them. If you want to buy a crooked filter that seals than wix # 51215 is your filter.

I use the NAPA Gold 1215 on my Harley. No problems and the one I have in the garage looks perfect.
Actually, I've been impressed with the WIX/NAPA filters and will probably use them in all my vehicles.

Care to share the lot#s? It should be easy to figure if they're of the same lot/shift/date/etc ..usually right down to the hour.

Kinda hard for Wix to use a tool to check the threads for correctness if they never get them back. Batch numbers or not.
