Wix 57055 C&P "Disappointment"

It's about the dP across the filter itself due the the flow rate and oil viscosity, regardless of the dP across all the other components of the oiling system. If there is too much dP across the media and center tube, then the bypass valve is closer to opening. If the louvers are really choked down, it's going to raise the dP across the bypass valve and make it open sooner an more often compared to open louvers that don't increase the dP.
Absolutely, I was just saying for a properly operating oil filter, isn't really an issue.

Interesting. I have a Napa Gold 100351 (Mann+Hummel) on the shelf for my 23 Colorado ZR2 that I won't use because the louvers look pretty bad. I just now found out that Napa Gold filters are now supplied by PGI. May have to check one out.

Yes, a decent oil filter will typically be around 1/15th as flow restrictive as the oiling system, and have around 4-6 PSI of dP with hot oil at around 8-10 GPM. But the filter bypass valve only reacts to what's going on with the dP across the media + center tube, regardless of what's happening in the rest of the oiling system. A badly choked down center tube, and/or badly loaded media will impact the bypass valve action.

They do if they are opened up well like they should be. If they looked even half choked down by looking down the center tube they get a reject from me. Solution - buy filters with holes in the center tube or an Ecore center tube.
Me too, so half are shut you get some flow through half a filter, no thanks, paper weight, you guys can have em

I have been reserching 57055 the last few days. This is what happened to me to provoke my reply.

I have been a long time user of the 57055 on my Subaru, which is driven by my daughter. I recently did an oil change and removed a 57055. By chance Rock Auto had not yet delivered my order so I was forced to use a new OEM Subaru filter from Walmart. Visually the new OEM fiter by Tokyo-Roki (spelling?) was great.

When preparing for the next oil change I inspected my recently arrived lot of 57055 filters from Rock Auto. I instantly noticed the change in bypass valve from the top of the can as we are all used to. It is now on the bottom like the majority of oil filters out there. I also noticed a LOT of glue around the new style bypass valve on the filter I was inspecting (for louver opening). It bugged me so much I cut it open. I found that the excesss glue had flowed into the bypass valve and glued it shut! I went so far as to put it in a vise with a socket against the valve- no movement. I cut another from the same lot open and the bypass valve/overall filter looked ok besides the change in bypass design. Going forward, Wix?

I still have the filter I cut open, and can provide pics of the glued shut bypass valve if needed.

First time ever C&P. Got a cheap $19 cutter on Amazon and it's great. Anyways here's a Wix 57055 filter removed from my 2021 2.5L Subaru Outback. 2,650 miles from January to June with Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w-30. To start off the louvers are atrocious. Barely a hairline open and many of them completely shut. Is this a common QC issue on Wix? Bypass valve has a sloppy/ stretched gasket. Media itself was rock solid. End caps were glued solid with practically no excess glue seen. ADBV rubber was in good condition. You know I think this filter was operating most of the time in the bypass mode due to louver issue. Just my speculation. Especially in the very cold weather this filter saw in MN winters for the first 3 months of the year. I got 2 more Wix filters with same part# in my stash I have to inspect but these filters are mostly all 1-2 years old from previous online orders.

Yeah post the pics please and make sure to check where it was made. ... I think there are some here that also buy those from Rock Auto.

Wix was THE filter for gas station mechanics 1999s,back when it was Dana corporation . So sad when China started making them .here we see today, how they've ruined wix.

Not so long ago life was simple knowing I could buy a Quality Gastonia North Carolina made with pride WIX filter...
I thought Trump was bringing production back to the USA?

Legitimate filter companies China and Vietnam have been producing filters with excellent build quality for years. I suspect some of this is due to the factories being newer, which means newer equipment which is more efficient.

Manufacturers need to invest in their equipment and good quality control programs regardless of where the factory is located.
