I went to go shopping at Meijer just after midnight on the start of july 4th. While in the store, I heard what I thought was someone playing with firecrackers, maybe outside on the parking lot. A minute later I was in the checkout line to pay for my groceries. Just as I was paying the cashier, a young man limped in and was crying and saying help me I've been shot! I looked at him and it appeared that he was shot in the thigh. He was 21 years old and was at a party where he was involved in a argument with someone and they decided to settle it on the Meijer parking lot. He was shot in his femoral artery. The guy cried with tears and was very emotional then he passed out and collapsed and died in a pool of blood about 7 feet away from me. His fiancee was there also. I wish at the time I knew about pressure points or something and maybe could have saved his life.

D@mn. That is disturbing. I'd be freaked out seeing that.

If he was shot in the femoral, pressure point probably would have added maybe a minute to his life.

I agree, time to look for a new place, or at least a new place to shop.

It's something how we sit and watch this stuff on television every week and don't blink an eye.

But, it's so traumatic to be involved with it in real life.

Please talk to a counselor of some sort for an hour or two to help you sort this out.

Peace

Depending on what caliber bullet, only surgery would have saved him. The femoral is one of the biggest arteries in the body, and it takes alot of force to stop the flow of it. Short of sticking your finger in the hole (which is not advised) not really much you can do, even as a Paramedic.

Blup is righht.. That poor guys was gone... Working in a maximum security prions I have seen ALOT of puncture wounds and smooshed heads...heh. You don't get used to it you just accept it. Talk to anyone just to vent.. Good luck to you...

I agree, sadly Katy, Texas has had a few gang shootings. blupupher, I knew the 18 year old who was shot in Green Trails. I went to school with him since elementary at Nottingham Country and graduated with him at Taylor.

blupupher is correct. The femoral is a vital artery is very very large and supplies the heart with a good majority of its blood. That blood has to go to the lungs to recieve its blood so without it, death will occur within 20-30 minutes. Think of is as an oil pan supplying a pump with oil. If the pan leaks out, the pump starts pumping nothing to the engine, causing engine failure.

When I interned (blupupher, I interned at Christus St. Catherine with the Miller Career Center's Clinical Rotation program) I learned that any injury to this artery requires attention withing 5 minutes of bleeding or wounding. In taekwondo, this translated into taking down a deadly attacker (like with a knife heald a certain way or someone with a gun) in a painful and lethal manner.

In short, it was too late. Just pray for the person and the person's family.

It may or may not have been of any help for this particular victim, but this incident highlights the benefit of Red Cross (or other organizations such as the American Heart Assn.) First Aid/CPR course for civilians. If your employer doesn't sponsor these, raise the idea with your HR department. Red Cross also offers half and full-day courses at local hospitals, YMCAs, etc.

"I wish at the time I knew about pressure points..." Here's a simplified pressure point diagram:

One of the illegals hired by the moving and storage firm I drove for collapsed. A "total fall" with NO attempt to break the fall with arms or hands.

Wandering over I performed the typical checks, then did it again..... then again.

Hmmmmm..... this guy isn't breathing and has no discernable pulse. Checked again. Hmmm..... he's starting to turn blue.

Made sure the guys airway was clear. Okay there. Just no breathing or pulse.

Decided the guy was in trouble. Drawing upon extensive first-aid training....... I added some "gut feeling".

Raising my clenched hand high I brought it down with all the force my 220 pounds could muster.

El whacko. Right over his heart.

Then, I yelled in his ear as loud as I could, "Breathe you SOB."

Hee hee....... with a convulsive reflex the guy gasped for air. In a few minutes his eyes were open, he was breathing, and his pulse was strong and steady. When the medicos arrived and hauled him off in the gurney his eyes sent his thanks as he looked at me.

I believe the term is precordial thump or sumpthin' like that. When a heart is beating irregularly or has stopped a very hard thump has been known to restore a regular heart beat.

Though I despise the millions of illegals I can not be inhumane to the individual.

Ole'
