I put 5-20 pp in my zj along with valvoline maxlife engine protector. it's a 94 with 145,000 miles on it. whats crazy is that the engine is quiet now. my be it is just me but it seems to be getting better MPG also even with 30/9.50/15's i hope it is not the quiet before the storm!

a ZJ is a Grand Cherokee Jeep. It is the body style 1993-98. What motor is in this? 4.0, or 5.2 v-8?

My thoughts exactly!

5w-20, probably work pretty good. 5w-20 is not the demon that alot of folks make it out to be.

Conventional 5W-30 shears down to about 8.5 cSt after a full oil run anyways, something like Castrol GTX 5W-20 ends up the same viscosity as a Pennzoil 5W-30 after 3000 miles.

If you can get a 5W-20 that will stay in grade right around 8.5 cSt for a full drain interval, you should have no problems.

I agree with what your saying, but the 4.0L calls for a 10W30. I have a 2004 Jeep with the 4.0L and I won't even put 5W30 in it. Been thinking about going to either a 0W40 or 5W40. Maybe the 5W20 will be okay, but I will let someone else experiment.

Thought I should add that mine only has 6,500 miles on it, so my engine is a lot tighter than his.

I just had a thought that it might get better mpg than it did with 5-30 i had run in it.

Yeah, if it asks for a 10W-30 it's expecting a higher viscosity oil over the longer run then. Might be better off with something like Havoline DS 5W-30 or 10W-30, the 10W-30 is a pretty thin oil on a relative scale, and although the 5W-30 starts out at 9.7 cSt from the UOAs I have seen it doesn't shear down past 9.0 cSt.

Most 4.0 GC engines will run a good long life to ~ 300,000 miles. I use a good quality 5w or 10w30 and PureOne or WIX oil filter and change at ~ 6,000 Miles. I think I would not run a 20 wt in my 4.0.

I always ran 10w30 M1 in my 98 xj (cherokee) for you non jeep guys.
Ran it to 104000 miles before trading it in. You could pull off the valve cover and it looked brand new in there.
The 4.0L responds well to M1. I loved that truck, but the MPG were horrible.
Bought a new Mazda 3s 2.3L What a change.
