Three weeks ago, I found my 15 pound rat terrier spitting up blood with labored breathing. He died before the vet's office opened.

Yesterday morning, I discovered my 70 pound retriever spitting up blood. I took her to the vet this morning and he said it looks like they were deliberately poisoned with rat poison. The retriever seems to be getting better but I have to give her a few more injections.

I guess I need a camera to catch the poisoner. What would be a good, inexpensive game/wildlife camera for this application?

That's just terrible and there is no excuse for it. I don't know anything about cameras but a 12 gauge with salt pellets would do the trick.

Good luck on catching the SOB that would do something like this.

If someone deliberately poisoned one of my animals the 12 gauge 870 Remington would be the tool used for that application, and it wouldn't be loaded with salt pellets either.

That's terrible! I hope you catch the bastages that are doing this.

I assume the dogs are contained in an area outside. There are affordable surveillance camera systems at Sams Club and Costco. You can also buy a kit from numerous online retailers that sell video surveillance systems. If those don't work for you contact a local CCTV/video security installer to come to your property and give you an estimate. A couple of well positioned cameras connected to a recording device like a hard drive or VCR may be all that's needed.

I assume you've filed police reports and documented these actions. Getting someone on video is not absolute proof but it'll help the police in determining who this is and possibly prosecute them. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Right on Rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hellyeah!

That really breaks my heart hearing that. I used to have a toy rat terrier and she was sooooooooooooooooo sweet. She dug a hole under the fence and got out. I put an add in the lost and found, checked the pound every day,and posted flyers everywhere. She was so friendly she probably was found by someone who took her in. I hope whoever it was,was good to her.

Subtlety is the key to revenge. Now if it want justice, go through the normal stuff (including the 870 route).

Wow. That would make me furious. Killing someone's dog ranks low on the totem pole.... reminds me of that CSI episode where this guys neighbor killed his dog because his neighbor's orchid was growing over into his yard. The guy trimmed it because of its intrusion.

Not a cool thing to do. I'd find the [censored] and then make them a nice cool drink, laced with antifreeze. Let them charge me with cruelty to animals.

When and where does anybody have access to your dogs? Could someone be chucking poisoned treats over the fence?

The dogs stay behind a chain link fence. Somebody definately threw something over the fence for them. With 3 weeks between the poisonings, it must be someone very close. There are 50 or so houses in this neighborhood, most people have been here for years or decades.

There is a new bunch of troublemakers that just moved in a month or two back. They are two houses down, so there is a very short list of suspects, but I have no proof.

Needless to say that if I catch them with a weapon (like poison) on my property then they get shot. This is Texas after all.

[censored] [censored] [censored] son of a [censored] [censored] for brains douchebag ******e would poison a dog?
Someone poisoned one of my shepherds when I was a teenager, and I wish I'd set their [censored] house on fire.

Poisoned food could be thrown quite a distance. This may take more than just cameras. Maybe more people are losing their pets, in your area.

The title summary in the forum list for this thread looks strange:

"I just had another dog..."

When and if you catch them, make the payback very long and extremely painful.

"Revenge is mine, sayeth the Lord." Okay by me, but justice belongs to the dog owner!

Yeah, the little rat terrier that died sure had a rough death. All of that dark blood and the labored breathing was hard to watch. I had no idea it was poison until today when the vet told me.

The vet said that people who do these things tend to have records of this kind of criminality. But getting the police to act can be a chore.

He told me to report it. So I guess I'll send the cops a letter and see what happens.

Just playing devil's advocate here, but some people really cannot stand barking dogs at night (like me). Now I'd never poison them, but I came awfully close to using my .22 a few times...

It does read a little like I paid someone to do it. We talk kinda funny down here. Some unknown person has poisoned my dogs on two seperate occasions.
