Why do you keep it so bleeping cold? The humidity? 78-79F is a common daytime AC temp around here. With reasonable humidity and ceiling fans it's comfortable and costs a boatload less than 70F.

70F inside just makes it feel more like you walked into an armpit when you do go outside.

Seems like in oppressively hot climates people like to live in freezers and in oppressively cold climates people like to live in saunas.

It's his comfort that's important to him, not yours.

I asked him, not you. LT4 isn't real shy about speaking for himself.

My wife complains if AC is not at 70 degrees. She can not sleep if the room is not cool. I set the AC at 80 when we leave the house and nobody is home.

We do have a few ceiling fans in the house but south FL is pretty warm and humid most of the year.

I was going to replace that one...sanding it to get it working was the easiest fix at 9pm at night. It stayed working the rest of the season and I forgot about replacing it. Should order one soon and replace it before winter.

When I lived in hawaii, we were military and didn't pay our utility bills in housing. So, we ran the A/C all the time. That compressor ran constantly for the majority of 4 years. I don't know what brand compressor it was, but I think it was an ancient york R-22 heat pump. That thing ran as perfect the day we left as the day we moved in.

There are a lot of poorly installed 'contractor grade' systems out there.
I keep a spare capacitor and contactor for my outside unit. I had trouble with ants. I replaced the contactor ($18) and soaked around the unit with Raid ant killer. I probably could have cleaned the contactor but it's cheap to replace. The capacitor is original Carrier 12 years old. If it fails I am ready. A good test meter pays for itself very quickly.

I keep A/C at 78 degrees in my apt. Not only is it tolerable, it saves me money on my electric bill, and my a/c unit for my apartment will last longer. I'll keep the same practice when I buy a house next year. My dad keeps his a/c at 70 degrees during the summer, he's already had problems with his central a/c leaking water all over his carpet. He keeps his on 70 degrees because my mom is obese. She says 78 degrees is too hot for her. She will even lower it to 65 degrees while they are sleeping at night. When you go inside their apartment, you feel this artic air hit you in the face as soon as you walk inside.

My wife claims that she gets a better nights sleep/rest when it is cool, she calls it 'hibernation mode'

if she doesn't get a good nights sleep/rest.... then she is very crabby the following day

Actually we keep it at 70 at night and 75 during the day when we are at home. When the house is empty during the day we set it at 79. Keeping the house at 78 when you are at home is impossible as its way to warm. Even with ceiling fans and floor fans its still way 2 warm.

Its a good thing I have a wall unit in the back of the condo. Without that I would be dead in the water when the a/c goes down.

Well the guy came over today to fix the A/C's and both units needed a new resistor. The A/C units in both condos are only 4 years old.

I went in just short time ago to check on them and one of the condos is back up to 85 and the a/c is not running again. I hope I don't have the call the guy back again. Will re check it first thing in the am.

Like I said I hate central air. If I could knock the wall out in front of the condo and put in a A/C like they have in some of the motels I would. I was in a Extended Stay a few months ago and that unit [10K BTU G.E.] would be great for me. I have a 10K BTU in the back of the condo so between the both it would work well. But the condo board would never go along with that in a million years.

Professional incompetence. That's when you pay for incompetence. I think it, not central air, might be the problem.

IOW the problems are due to a poor installation.
