Yeah, me too. And I would have been screwed. At age 72 I'm not as fast on my feet as I used to be! But bluffing is good.

Know a lot of teachers and have my own experience-it is just getting worse and worse. I know every older generation(s) complains about the younger ones coming up, but in this case, there is definite truth to the general pattern getting worse and worse. This past school year, for whatever reason, in our area, the 9th graders were particularly special.
Mind you, this is in a rural, small town (and largely mostly conservative leaning): One student asked one teacher I know, "have you had any one close to you die?" Teacher replied yes, kid responded, "Good, I hope they died a horrible death". Another student asked a teacher I know, "Does your husband have a veiny 'member' (insert 4 letter word that begins with d)?" Course he lied to his mom about it later, and said he asked about her husband's arms, because of working out. The mom made such a stink, that admin demanded that the teacher get 5 or 6 witnesses to corroborate her account. She got more, and most did.
Many of the 9th graders failed or nearly failed most of their classes. Many are just nasty, bratty, self entitled, take little to no responsibility for their actions, low conscience, low empathy, obsessed with image. One of the teachers above has been teaching for over 2 decades and she is seeing major, major changes over time. America is severely failing our children on multiple fronts.I don't think there is one "smoking gun" reason for this, but a combination of a lot of different issues ranging from parenting, diets/food, media/entertainment, being forced to teach to a test, etc.

Yep! That's how it starts, and with the kid mentioned here the simple fact that he refused to cooperate speaks volumes. If it was his first time I'd think he would have been scared and cooperated. If I were a gambling man I'd be willing to bet when they get older they'll be robbing houses, cars, and people.

I assume these are local kids? That is a lot of mail too, seems odd they would bother to repeat offend, as I can't think of much that comes in a mail box that would be interesting to kids?

My nephew is a special ed teacher in an urban school. In his school, there are absolutely zero consequences for any behavior that does not end up a police matter and often not even then... and I'm not just talking about the special ed kids.

Eh, almost anywhere has a few kids like that in the average classroom now.... And most of them see lots of terrible behaviour like that, portrayed as funny, on whatever apps they use. It's hard to explain to my kids why the bad behaviour isn't punished severely at school, and how those kids parents can somehow think their kid shouldn't even be mildly punished.
There are lots of parents who just don't care what their kid does, so sending them home is worse for that kid, but dealing with kids like that everyday is driving lots of teachers away.
I think now that that social media is monopolized, the big players need to use all their knowledge gained on how kids minds work, for good purposes. And also have simple easy to use parental controls, instead of making it a PITA to monitor what your kid is looking at.

But the irony to me is this. The boomers are the ones who complain the most about the younger generation - yet there were the ones who raised this generation!
I'm a boomer and ran a tight ship, a ship so tight my parents used to think I was too hard on them. But understand, I never laid a hand, not once, on either one of them.
Grounding and taking away privileges does wonders. Our oldest son had a friend I didn't trust or like. I banned this kid from our home and banned our son from going to his house.
Well, I found out our son went to this kids house. I grounded our son for a FULL MONTH. The only time he was allowed outside for that entire MONTH was to go to school. This was a big penalty for a high school sophomore.
The result? Both my sons are respectful, law abiding, and highly successful in their careers.
And another thing - teach your kids to look people in the eye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is an issue in certain zip codes in Baltimore City. You mail a check at the post office and it still gets stolen.
I’m retired now, but if I had to go back to work I’d apply to the Walmart tire and lube center or a garbage truck route before I would go back to a classroom.

Hard to say, but I put it on their parents.
There's no doubt our education system needs some reforms, but the problem today (IMO) is that parents have shirked their parental responsibilities and have placed them on the teachers and school system. Yet, when the teachers or school disciplines a child the parents raise heck. Back in my youth, some kids were always getting suspended, and a few expelled. If a school did that now they'd probably be sued by the parents because of their child's "loss of educational opportunity".
Unless there's a mental illness issue, I place the blame for a child's poor behavior and lack of academic achievement solely on the parents.

My son's beat (Henrico County PD) is on the east side of the county. Maybe he'll have the honor of meeting those kids in the future LOL.
I wasn't the greatest kid growing up.
Looking back now, I feel my father gave up on me starting at age 10.
But when I now wake up every morning, I am now the person who I want to be.
Edit: I try to be friendly, knowledgably and helpful (to everyone).

Mail theft very common here. But done by people much older than those kids. We had to get a $450/ yr po. Box as too much was being stolen and we were getting bombarded by CC stuff that had been stolen from our box.
