Gang,

Here is a non-scientific comparison of 2 cartridge filters for my 2006 Hyundai Azera Limited. I have the Hyundai OEM filter and the Purolator PureOne filter. The Hyundai OEM was about $8.00 and the Purolator was about $13.00 (I managed to reduce this to $10.00 with an AAP discount code).

There are some obvious differences between the two, but for me the most obvious ones are:
  • Purolator uses a felt "washer" on each end of the filter whereas the Hyundai uses a rubber o-ring. I am not sure if this is why Hyundai states that use of OEM filters prevents the knocking sound (as noted by a Hyundai TSB), but it would seem so.
  • The Hyundai kit includes a new drain plug bolt washer but the Purolator does not.
  • Both filters seem to use synthetic filter media and both are well constructed with the Purolator made in the USA and the Hyundai made in Korea. I would not have a fear of using either in my car, but after I use the 2 PureOnes that I bought, I will return to using the OEMs.
  • The filter media seems to be more tightly oriented on the Hyundai as opposed to the Purolator. While I cannot be sure without a dissection, I believe the Hyundai filter has more total media area than the PureOne.
Apologies if some of the images are turned 90 degrees, ImageShack would not let me change the orientation, even after I saved them in the correct orientation with my image editing program.

As always, thoughts and comments are welcome!

I cut open my Hyundai Sonata (Canister Type) today. I was very impressed by the construction. Would need a particle count to see how it filters though.

you'll change your mind.

I'll take the Purolator!

I also used the same Purolator filter in my Hyundai a few years ago for one OCI. I don't care for the felt "gasket" on the ends of the filter, so I switched to the FRAM CH9999.

The FRAM (I believe) is identical to the OEM in all aspects--it may even be manufactured by the same source (It also is made in Korea). Those can be bought at Walmart for about $7 each. FYI. . .--Rob

Interesting, however the newest Hyundia OEM Mahle made for the 3.8L Genesis uses "felt only" endcaps with no composite/nylon endcaps at all. Basically it's an ecore design, and the dealer charges ~~$4-4.50 more than the similar (top) Hyundia OEM shown above, ~$10.50 If this is sign of things to come perhaps Hyundai will be going to this new cheaper looking, cheaper to make design. Only time will tell.

Fortunately the old design is still available under the old app#, and Wix makes an excellent looking aftermarket I will be using in the future.

fwiw, unlike their canister filters, Puro cartridges seem to be playing catch up a tad in their design, to the OEM's. That said, I wouldn't have any problem using the Puro cartridge shown here.

Thanks for the pics.

Nor Do I.

However, The Fram CH9999 Is Now made in China, and there is a DEFINITE quality difference than the one made in Korea. If you get one, you will see. You have to check the box for the Korean made one. They are still out there on stock, but not for long.

Geeze. . . that's too bad their making 'em in China. . .I've got a couple CH9999's on the shelf (Korean-made), so I'm good for a couple more OCIs. I'll have to check out the new China-made ones. Do you have any pics of them so we can see the differences in quality?
