Being in the engine business sometimes we see a really sludged up engine and just think it happened due to neglect but today we got in a hyundai Santa Fe 2007 i believe with 101,503 miles and the engine was so sludged up i could not believe it...I have heard people complain about hyundai sludge problems but today i saw it with my own eyes.. I happen to know this guy and he changes his oil no matter what at the 3500 mile mark and has all the receipts to prove it.. He began having problems at around 90,000 it would use a little oil but the dealer would not do anything saying they found no problem at all.. Tomorrow we will finish taking it apart so it can be rebuilt (when he asked if i could go to court with him i said yes) Anyone else have a problem with hyundai?

3500 OCI's and sludge do not go together unless the oil is being squeezed out of shale directly into his crankcase.

Me thinks something is missing re. sludge and 3,500 mile oci.If someone has really kept to this oci you know they changed the filter and used good oil. So as they say in the trade what is the rest of the story???
it looks like it was a head problem from the factory that caused the head gasket to finally go by the looks of it and by talking to eddie the guy that owns this car he said every once in a while he added coolant...
It was a factory defect (very slight coolant seeping into the oil)
we will know for sure tomorrow..Note this is the reason i put seal tabs into all the engines that leave here...

Well 07 with over 100K means at least 25k a year. So if he did 3500 OCI then we would be changing oil every 6-8 weeks.
Coolant seeping into the oil is not on heard of with Hyundai's garbage head gaskets. This is how my 03 Elantra died this Spring. I noticed that the engine at about 95000 miles was not sounding right but no one could find anything wrong. Intake manifold gasket was good compression checked out. I was told I was just hearing things/crazy. At about 105000 miles my radiator started leaking not badly but I had to add once a week. This of course had to happen in the winter so I planed on replacing it my self this spring. This February I went to change the oil and looking down the oil filler and saw sludge. Took it in and sure enough head gasket is bad. I'm just thankful I still have my reliable 94 Delso around.

I've never heard of Hyundais having sludge issues either, but if the head gaskets are prone to seep into the oil passages, then that would certainly be a recipe for disaster. If you want to talk sludge issues, how about the VW/Audi 1.8T engines, the Toyota 3.0 and 3.3 V6s, and GM's Northstar V8s?

Friend has a 07 Santa Fe with the 2.7 V6, 65K miles and a 5K OCI with Motorcraft syn blend 5w-20. Engine is really clean inside.
Cousin has a 06 Sonata LX with the 3.3l v6. 80K on the car and 7-10k OCI with GC, and engine is clean.
From these cars and the used oil analysis posted here, most Hyundai engines seem pretty easy on oil. I would think most conventional oils will handle a 5k oci pretty easily. Something had to be going wrong for awhile to build up the sludge.

I've only been following Hyundai forums for a year or so, but this is the first I've heard of this issue with the 2.7L V6, or any Hyundai product for that matter. I'm only at 50Kmi with my 2008 2.7L, but it's clean as a whistle peering though the "710" hole.

If there was coolant leaking into the oil anything can sludge up.
Adding coolant for no easily explainable reason such as a visible leak is a reason to do a used oil analysis to check for coolant or a pressure test.
This should have sent warning bells that something was wrong.
