Hyundai Sludge Problems ?

Adding coolant for no easily explainable reason such as a visible leak is a reason to do a used oil analysis to check for coolant or a pressure test.

This should have sent warning bells that something was wrong.

And there are quite a few cars that have HG issues, and very few I've ever heard are Hyundais.....

Seems sooner or later every car maker has something come up that bites them ( and the owners ) in the behind .

I wonder if Hyundai will fess up and have a recall ?

I've owned 2 Hyundais with a combined 238K miles between the 2 cars. Never had the slightest bit of sludge with either of them, nor have I ever heard of sludge issues with Hyundai vehicles in general.

That's interesting....I personally have owned 2 Kia's 07 Rio and 08 Optima....no problems what so ever with oil burning or "consumption" of any kind....but YES, after reading this thread, it is an eye opener, both vehicles would "consume" coolant it seemed....it tempted me to do a used oil analysis on my Optima (replaced the Rio when it got totaled....) but never got around to it....and then sure enough, when I got the Optima, same deal started sprouting up. The day I got it from the dealer, I popped the hood, checked the dipsticks, checked the reservoirs, noticed the coolant was below Full, so the service department brought out their jug of "50/50" KIA coolant and topped off the translucent tank for me....couple months go buy, I notice the coolant gradually decreasing...

Now, I read that coolant isn't supposed to be "consumed" lol...it either boils out, or leaks out....

And this has me curious, since Hyundai is OWNED by KIA, they are basically the same company, so there could be some faulty Kia's out and about too....but how many "reports" does it take before they deem a "recall" necessary...?


But as far as sludge, nope, never had a problem. In fact my latest oil change on my Optima the tech said the oil looked surprisingly clean for 4k.....so who knows...I would send the used oil analysis in, but no real point in sending it in since the car is gone...

i own two now and have a new santafe i have had five all together and never had a sludge problem.nor did they use any oil.

I believe you need to examine how oil sludge forms inside the engine first. Regardless of what brand wether conventional or synthetic short trips that won't allow the oil to get hot and flow inside the engine can cause this to occur.

My only real solution I suggest is to have your engine flushed annualy and put in fresh oil.

3.3`s are not on the sludge list.
