While visiting the dealership yesterday to pick up my floor mats and cargo net, I passed through the maintenance area and struck up a conversation with two Technicians and the Service Manager concerning, of course, oil for the 2.0T. They went over the obligatory manual recommendation of a 5w30 and, for some variants, 5w40 as the official company line. Feeling more comfortable that I new a little concerning oil, they offered this, UNOFFICIALLY. One of them owns a new 2013 SFS 2.0T (like mine) and he only uses QS Defy 5w30. He sends off the used oil to BLACSTONE after every 5k mile OC and they have suggested he can go much further, 8k mi. He says he uses it because of the extra detergents and protection the ZDDP provides, plus the manual does say SL is permitted. He says he could care less about the fuel saving oils. The Service Manager agreed 100%.

Thoughts?

How cool to end up having that unexpected conv where you are face to face with a fellow UOA user!?

Just wanted to comment, I have nothing to add about Defy.

He said he has vivited BITOG as well, just never joined. Me mentioning that I may send off for a UOA is what sparked his openness.

Since you`re in a warm/hot climate,and Hyundai lists 5W40 as a recommended oil,I`d use a 5W40 synth.

Defy is an excellent oil and would be a reasonable choice for that application IMO. My only concern would be warranty due to the SL rating for the high additive levels. I'm surprised the manual allows for SL but if it does Defy would be a great choice.

That being the case Mobil 1 HM would be a good one too.

What gets me in 2011 the 2.0T spec'd a 40w now a 30w?? I think Hyundai is just trying to squeeze every MPG out of every ounce of gas.

Personally?? I think using a standard mid weight 30w oil in a DI motor that has forced induction is a bad idea.

By all means go by what Hyundai recommends but check the manual to see what exactly can be used. Personally I would be running a light 40w like M1, PU 5w40, or a Heavy 30w like GC (or now BC Belgium Castrol).

If allowed, Redline 5w30 would be perfect IMO for this application as well.

Just my ten cents.....

From the owners manual:

If the API service SM engine oil is not available in your country, you are able to use API service SL.
