I'd suggest you check with Jim Allen on that one. If it were out of warranty, a restriction gauge could be run and I suspect the air filter replacement interval would be much, much longer.
I agree with this 100%. I'm thinking about getting a restriction gauge. All I was saying was that the suggested time / mileage interval on Hyundai's air filters isn't bad... probably too often for most, but I have seen far more ridiculous recommendations such as every year or 12,000 miles. That is really bad advice since a new air filter actually lets more dirt through than a used one.
They have to be conservative on the suggested intervals because they know people will tend to stretch things, and some driving conditions will have an impact. Also, most people never check these things and the filter can become damaged in other ways (such as a mouse chewing through it).
I realize the car in question is seeing new air filters at ridiculously low mileage. That's because it is being done based on time and the car isn't driven enough. Honestly I think it would be fine to leave them in longer.
Regarding warranty concerns, it is reasonable for them to ask for maintenance records, especially for oil changes, transmission fluid changes, etc. These parts rarely fail within warranty unless they are defective and fail early... or they are abused. There are exceptions, but it is not unreasonable to be suspicious about maintenance on a car with a blown engine at 90,000 miles.
