3 weeks ago i got an o4 rendevous and decide to do a mpg study pre and post change over from previous owner to me.
The columns on the left are the avg. speed and coresponding mpg. Columns on the right are after changing fuel filter, air filter, 204s Schaeffers transmission fluid and 5-30 schaeffers supreme blend engine oil.

avg sp mpg avg sp mpg
24.6 16.5 24.9 18.6
39.4 20.2 38.1 21.2
42 20.4 42 21.3
56 22 51.1 22.5
61 22.1 57 23
64 23 61.5 24.5
63 24 62.5 22.9
70 22.5 69 22.6
71 21 70.1 22.9

Combined average.
54.5 18.96 52.9 22.2

Test were done over a 1 1/2 week period for each. Temps did rise for the second half. Black tops, around town interstates. Anywhere from 60 miles to 200 miles per test.
Variables? temps, syn trans fluid, Schaeffers friction modifiers in the engine oil, filters?
Neutra purge done with the first half and in about half of the first gas tank fulls, while only in 2 of the second half tanks.

Regardless of the whys and wherefores i conclude that i am definelty getting better fuel economy than the previous owner, perhaps as muchj a 10%.

Are you saying the previous owner got the results in the first column, and you got the results in the second column after doing all those changes?

Accounting for the avg speed differences and change to Schaeffer's, I'm getting a decrease in mpg. ??? I'm getting 18.4... based on 54.5 with Schaeffer's.

Warmer temperatures are probably the biggest effect. According to my scanguageII my around town mpg in the truck has risen from 15 to 17 in the last week or so with higher ambient temps.

First test temps were about 25. Second test around 50. However the last test done Friday and sat. temps were back to 25 and the last test was the 24.9 avg speed 18.6 mpg. which is much better than the correlating first test.

1st column is average speed before changeover.
2nd avg mpg before
3rd avg speed after
4th avg mpg after

air filter wasn't all that dirty.
This is an all wheel drive. I gotta believe that the Schaeffers trans 204 syn has a lot to do with it versus oem fluid with 60k. The engine oil and neutra purge being the other contributing factor.

Nothing unscientific here. You gave the vehicle a minor tuneup, used quality fluids, and were rewarded with better MPG.

I'll usually can shock people with performance(MPG, smoothness, HP) improvements when they leave their vehicle with me for an afternoon for some maintenance.

Did you flush it or just do a pan pull?

Also, why do you continue to buy GM 3.4 V6 engines when they've given you intake gasket problems in the past?

pan pull.
Gm's have treated me very well over the years. The one instance with intake gasket was covered by Gm in an 02. Did they switch after 03? Warranty will cover this one as well.

yes, unscientific avg. but if you look across the columns, like-like avg speed the after schaeferizing gets the thumbs up with regards to mpg.

The gasket issues were fixed sometime in the 2003 model year. The 3.4 engine gets really good gas mileage, has decent power, and other than the gasket issue very dependable. Besides, even if you have the gaskets leak, the repair still isn't any more expensive than a timing belt/water pump job on an import.
