I have a 2000 Hyundai Accent 126,000 miles.I've replaced the Mass air sensor 4 times since sept 2005.The replacemnts have been from Oreily's auto parts.Remanufactured,lifetime warranty.the Oreily's people are saying the car has a problem.Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?Thanks, George

George, what is prompting the MAF replacement? lean/rich codes? Misfires? I've never really seen a MAF go bad, only get dirty. Oiled aftermarket air filters or modified "cold air intakes" are notorious for coating a MAF with junk. They are easy to clean with spray electronics cleaner.

Well there's a couple of paths. First, the O'Reilley's MAF's are junk or they're good. If they're junk maybe they're failing prematurely. If they're good then something is making them go bad, and an oiled air filter, especially one that was reoiled can certainly be a culprit. They MAF is a pretty simple device so otherwise who knows. Did replacing the MAF each time actually fix whatever problem you were having?
Theory: Your car is running right on the edge of it's allowable long-term fuel trim due to a problem not related to the MAF and the slight degradation of the MAF over time combined with this other problem is enough to turn on the light (comes on at +/- 25% fuel trim adjustment).
Installing a new MAF clears the problem up, but only until that new MAF degrades ever so slightly as they will over time.
Replace the MAF, then check the long-term fuel trim. If it's still very high then you have some other problem.

Step 1. Replace the MAF with KEFICO kind. The Defective kinds are made from DAESUNG.
Step 2. Don't use Aftermarket brand
Step 3. Makes sure the Arrow is pointing the right direction.

I have a confession to make.I assumed just because the the engine light was on ,given the trouble i've had with the maf,i replaced it without having codes checked.I made my mind up to replace it twith factory MAF,but before i shelled out $225 I had the code checked.To make a long story short all was wrong was bad spark plug wire.I replaced the wires,now I'm good to go.In my defense the wires were only a year old,napa brand.Thanks to everyone ,I think I will go with a factory MAF,if this one gives me trouble,Thanks,Do not judge me to harsh.
