Hey,I have a 2000 Hyundai Accent,117,000 miles.About 6 months ago i replaced MAF sensor.Got it from Oreily's ,rebuilt but lifetime warranty.3 weeks ago check engine light, sensor went bad, replaced it.Less than a week light is on again, car ran terrible, replaced it about 2 days ago.So far so good. What I'm wanting to know is I'm I just getting defective sensors,or is there something wrong causing them to go bad?Oreily's are great folks to deal with by the way.

Are you using a stock Hyundai air filter, or are you using one of those "boutique" aftermarket filter systems which are currently popular (undeservedly popular IMO). Revert to a new clean stock filter.

Check for air leaks in the ducting between the air filter and the MAF. Verify that the air filter is seating propelry and its gasket is sealing. Verify the PCV system is functioning and the PCV valve is good. You don't want any back pressure from the crankcase flowing backwards into the air filter. The fumes and blow-by gas can contaminate a MAF.

thanks.i'm not using a stock hyundai filter,i've used mostly frams some purolators.right now there is auto zone house brand in it.always changed at 12-15,000 miles.pcv valve was replaced around time the sensor was replaced.i'll look at everything again in the morning.thanks, george

Hey George, Purolator is fine, just make sure that its gasket is tight and it's sealing well. Earlier I was thinking that maybe you were using one of those reusable filters which have to be moistened with engine oil. Those can sometimes contaminate a MAF.

Take another peek inside the air cleaner housing. Look for any oil stains, puddles, or residue inside the filter housing, or on the filter. This might indicate a problem with the PCV system which is allowing crankcase products to enter upstream of the MAF.

Also check the hoses which connect to the PCV valve. It's possible for the hoses which connect to it to be obstructed, or cracked. Even if the PCV valve is good, problems with those hoses could cause oil mist and crankcase gasses to flow backwards through the system. Check for vacuum leaks in general.

Another possibility is that the MAF is actually OK, and your problem is the wiring harness or the connector. Maybe the contacts on the connector are oxidized or splayed. A bad crimp on one of the pins could cause an intermittent. A burned or chafed wire somewhere in the harness is another item to consider. Don't overlook those possibilities.

Who knows, maybe everything is OK, and you just had a run of bad luck with the replacement parts. It happens.
