We just got our Hyundai Sonata back with a new (rebuilt) long block. The car is in great shape with 145,000 miles, and I will be using it to drive ~1,600 -2,000 miles a month, mostly long trips, so I'm thinking about keeping it for a while as a commuter.

My plan is to use Hyundai filter, even though they didn't question the aftermarket filters I used in the past or when I took it in for a blown engine, see post.

So now I have to decide what oil I want to try to keep this one from drinking oil like the old one... I'm thinking 3,500 miles OCI with a 5W30. I ran a lot of Mobil in the last one, but some 6500 OCI.

Mobil EP 5W-30, Mobil ESP 5W-30, Valvoline RP 5W-30, something else?

We have a 2018 Sonata 2.4l Most of its life was QS FS 5w30. Severe schedule 3500-4000 mi. At 111k now. Recently switched to Supertech 20k 5w30. Seems fine and is priced right. But yeah any 5w30 on the severe schedule

All of your oil choices appear good - Owners of the Hyundai 2.4L Theta II say to go with 3,000 mile to 3,500 / 6month mile OCI’s no matter what . For an oil filter , while the Hyundai OEM is a rugged built oil filter - it’s still basically just a “rock catcher” as the filtration is not the greatest allowing larger size particles through versus a Fram Tough Guard (good) , Fram Ultra (better) , Fram Endurance (best) available from WM .

Valvoline RP 5w30. Just picked up 2019 23K mi and changed the oil to this . Will continue to use it going forward.

How do you figure that about the OEM filter?

FWIW OP, I've had a 2017 Sonata 2.4L for 70k (bought used with 25k, totalled just over 90k) and now have a 2019 Kia Sportage with 110k (bought used with 98k) on a nearly identical 2.4L. I'm using Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 at 5,000 miles OCIs.But your plan seems solid to me, as others have pointed out.

In my opinion, 3-4k OCIs, even on these notorious engines, is a little excessive given the oils you plan to use, and for the type and sheer volume of driving it seems you will be doing. Definitely change before 5k though.

Edit: I should note, both cars burned oil, about a quart every 500/1000 miles. There's not much I've tried that has worked to slow things down, yet. But the Kia was already burning oil, where as the sonata didn't start until after about 50-60k I can't remember exactly.

ESP 5w-30 or ESP 0w-30 every 4k miles, OEM or Mann filter which is same thing.
I'm currently on ESP 5w-30 half way thru OCI and I like it better than Pennzoil Euro LX, never thought I'd say that :ROFLMAO:
I'm not partial to brands while I have a dislike for some.

any good 5w-30 full synthetic high milage you find at wall Mart, like Quaker state Ultimate, or Valvoline EP, are fine choices and a fram ultra filter.

Yeah hopefully the weekly long distance (430 miles) trips and good oil and 3,500 oci will keep it from burning oil. Our old engine was burning a lot before it finally gave up. If this plan doesn’t work there is no hope for these engines.

I’m going to go against most of the people here . 2016 Sonata Sport , 2.4 L , 139000 miles on original motor and doesn’t burn hardly any oil . Maybe half a quart in 5000 miles . Nothing but Quaker State 5W- 20 and I add 12oz of Prolong Engine treatment.

I’ve been doing the same oil change since I bought it with 3800 miles on it .

I run the car for Sales the last 4 years and it sits outside every day. Lots of stop and go driving and I kind of beat the snot out of it .

I’m more worried about the transmission than the motor. About to do my third drain and fill .

Saw the the link to the other thread but didn’t see what happened to your motor?

Why was the engine rebuilt?

Hyundai was sued over these engines a few years back. As part of the settlement certain 2.4 theta engines have a lifetime warranty for rod bearing issues. Ours started knocking and went into limp mode. Hyundai replaced the long block with a rebuilt unit free of charge at ~144,000 miles. It came complete with most things like water pump and sensors.
