Hypothetical: Supertech Syn vs Top conventional?

If you had the choice between supertech synthetic and a top tier conventional like Pennzoil Conventional or Valvoline conventional, which would you choose and why?

Super Tech Synthetic, because engines I have used it in always got smoother in a way, at least going from conventional to Super Tech. And no matter what people say about Pennzoil Conventional cleaning properties - I am ready to bet that if two similar engines get 5k OCIs, one on Pennzoil Conventional and other on Super Tech Synthetic - the engine with Super Tech will be a bit cleaner inside after 200k miles.
 
Well it's a bit more complicated because Super Tech Syn is a USA synthetic and that means what ... It means a bunch of Grp II and whatever ...

But a modern "conventional" means what ... It means Grp II and, guess what, and unknown percentage of Grp III. So which is superior? They're both blends.

Do you really think Super Tech Syn is better than Pennzoil conventional, or Supreme?
 
Good question, and I'm sure you'll get lots of differing opinions, but this is how I see it..

a top-tier conventional, like Pennzoil Conventional, Quaker State Conventional, etc.. will provide extremely good protection, lubrication, etc.. and most likely include a decent amount of Grp III, as Broc mentions

Super Tech synthetic will also likely provide some excellent protection, etc..

but, Super Tech synthetic is over $17 a jug, and I can get Pennzoil Conventional for about $13.. and as far as I'm concerned, both would EASILY go the distance on the standard 7,500 mile OCI that I run in my Fusion.. So I'll go with the Pennzoil Conventional and save $4 per OCI.

All other things being equal (add pack, viscosity, etc) then the oil with the lower Noack volatility, which should be the synthetic.

To me low volatility equals high stability and reflects the quality of the base oils used. Yes there is more to an oil than just Noack, but if everything else is the same then Noack has the final say for me.

That Pennzoil conventional was producing some steller low Noack figures about a year a go. The speculation was disposal of excess GTL base stock.

I was looking at some PQIA data, and synthetic Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5W30 had a Noack of 8.7% and Mobil 1 5W30 had 10.1% while mineral GTX HM 5W30 had a Noack of 13.3% and Quaker State Conventional 5w30 had 14.6%. These seem typical figures.

Yep, and I think it may be due to Noack volatility mentioned before. API SN requires a 15% max, while Dexos requires a 13% max volatility. The two synthetics list above (M1 and Quaker State Ultimate Durability) easily make this cut off, but the two mineral oils (GTX and Quaker State Conventional) do not. These were just some typical values I found on PQIA, not sure if they are completely up to date.

PQIA gives ST at 11.3%
 
Hate to disagree but Castrol GTX 5w20 just tested was 12.1 NOACK and Quaker State Conventional was 11.4. So these "conventional" oils actually surpass the Dexos specification for volatility. These were recently tested in the last year as well.

That being stated, this is a interesting question by KingCake. I have to say that I would have no issue with running either one of the proposed choices. But if I had to choose I would run the SuperTech Full Synthetic blended by WPP. They do make some very good products which are well priced. Now, I am happily running Castrol gold bottle in my car which is vast overkill for a car specd for an API SM.

Interesting. I didn't know this about Dexos.
 
Add to that HTO-06 tests used oil in Honda and Acura turbo's makes for an even harder test. So with a oil that's Dexos approved for new oil and one that passes HTO-06 makes for a strong product to be used.

Hi BBHero, yes, no problems and always good to hear from you. I do recall some excellent conventional figures recently, but I couldn't quote the actual numbers off the top of my head. Most of the figures I got from google were a few years old (circa 2013) but, apples with apples, most of the figures (M1, GTX, Quaker State Conventional) were about the same age.

I, like you I believe, tend to follow the specs on the bottle, as these act as a guarantee of what quality you can expect inside. With Noack volatility API SN is 15% max, while Dexos1 and A5/B5 and A3/B4 are all 13%, with MB 229.5 being 10%.

This removes the confusion of asking yourself, "did I get the good brew?". For example Noack figures returned from PQIA for Pennzoil Conventional 5w20 gave 6.5% for a bottle purchased in 2013, and 13.1% for a bottle purchased in 2016. Same bottle, different contents.

So to answer the OP's original question a different way, as I can't test every bottle of oil I purchase. I would go the oil with the better specs, which in the example given by the OP, is the ST with the Dexos1 spec.
 
Excactly SR5, I'm not sure Noack percentage is the only value that makes an oil Dexos certified. If an oil doesn't have this approval on the bottle, it isnt certified. The avg cosumer will look no further than what is listed on the label. The OP's inquiry concerns ST vs Conventionals... no mention of blends.
