A friend shared these before and after pictures of his 2013 Chevy Cruze 1.4L turbo. He purchased the car with 67k miles and used Valvoline Advanced 5W-30 until 137k miles. He then switched to High Performance Lubricants HDMO 5W-30 and currently at 140k miles, 3k miles on the HPL. The first picture is at 137k miles before the switch the HPL. The other 2 pictures are current after 3k miles with HPL. The Valvoline was run at 7,500 mile OCIs.

Would have been great if he'd taken the first picture from the same angle, but we sometimes can't be that mindful of before/after perspective when doing these things. Definitely looks like the varnish is lightening up a touch (so being removed). Is he planning on doing a subsequent check in say 10,000 miles or so?

It’s probably important to note that this being our original HDMO 5w30. It has the slowest rate of cleaning of the oils we make. The current oil will are shipping will clean over 3X better. The pictures in the other thread were of an engine at 180,000 miles on a 5w40 of the same formula. It definitely runs clean and in this case it will continue to clean.

I'm curious why the engine is apart so often? I owned a 2011 and a 2014 Cruze and liked them both a lot. Both were sold after 3 years so I didn't get past 36,000 miles. I know they're problematic for cracks in the turbo, and helped a guy change one, which a lot of work in a small space.

The first time was to see where the engine stood following the Valvoline use, before putting in HPL. The second time now is due to the water pump failing, overheating it, and pushed the head gasket between 2 cylinders. The original plan was to go 10k miles on HPL.

Those are some compelling photos.

7,500 mile OCI only if you do all interstate driving ... No doubt HPL oils are excellent but changing M1 synthetic oil at a 4,000 ~ 5,000 max OCI would most likely look near spotless as well .

Lighting is brighter in the "after" pic- engine looks cleaner?
