HPL HDEO CK-4 5w-30 6k on oil 2002 Dakota 3.9 v-6

This oil is still in service. 3.9 “magnum v-6 “ engine. Didn’t see any carbon or lil’ metal bits in Toyota filter either. Will re-sample at 12,000 miles. Been driving truck daily least half hour to hour drives to keep everything hot and moving.
Ah, the old 318-with-two-cylinders-chopped-off 3.9 V6. 1980s Chrysler engineering.

But that 318 DNA means they tend to last pretty well. Long rods, short stroke, low side loading on pistons.

The initially high iron seems to be trending down in terms of ppm/kmiles.

Good stuff, thanks for the contribution in spite of personal frustration.

Yes, dad had a 92’ extended cab Dakota with manual transmission. Put 440k on it. 2wd truck. Traded it on this one.

I drove that 92’. Darn thing go anywhere and always shift smooth. Same 3.9 engine.

Whoops, I saw the "Magnum" but ignored the rest. However, isn't that engine just a 360 with the rear two cylinders chopped off? (Edit: I cheated and checked the bore/stroke. It's de-bored and de-stroked. Not as closely related as I imagined.)
It’s based on the old 318 LA engine, but AFAIK there was never a non-magnum version, so the 3.9 always had the Magnum still changes (stud mounted rockers instead of shaft, oil through pushrods, vertical intake bolts, etc). Still the same 59 degree lifter bore block that goes all the way back to the 1964 273 introduced for the Barracuda. That was the first “LA” engine (i.e. Lightweight “a” engine). The other old polyhead 318 A engine didn’t become the LA variant until 1967.

The 3.31” stroke was the LA stroke length for all engines until the 360 came along in the 1970s. The stroked it to 3.58” and bored it to 4” even (a decrease from the 4.04” of the 340). Because they used cast crankshafts, the 360s all had external balancing— typically an offset weighted crank damper and/or (get this) specially weighted torque converters.

Yes, they balanced the engine in the torque converters. SMH.

Give me a 318 over a 360 any day.
