I should add that the problems are while in school.

My daughter is in graduate school. She tells me that she and her classmates with PCs are always having internet connections getting dropped.

Of course the Mac people don't have the same problems she tells me. She does not have the money right now for a Macbook. Any suggestions about a better wireless card, or external antennae that might work better? Thanks

Heh.. A Compaq/HP CQ61.. or even worse yet, CQ56! That is why.
(Ever wonder why HP and Compaq costs less, even with larger screens, particularly at Walmart? because they suck, thats why.)

yes, get ANY "Linksys" USB one and it will stop doing this.

And the Mac people thing is just a form of gratification labeled "Censored." Ill bet they all have iPhones too.. sheesh, like THOSE are the best? Not necessarily, and frequently, no.

Here, let me help you out! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Linksys-Ultra-Ra...=item257ac032cd

*btw: had a Compaq CQ56. Hint: NEVER BUY A COMPUTER FROM A PAWN SHOP. THEY ARE THERE FOR A REASON AND ARE NOT A BARGAIN. BEEN TO THIS MOVIE THREE TIMES.

If the issue is indeed as widespread as she appears to let on, have they not reported it to the school's IT department? This may be a firmware bug with a particular brand of wireless card used with the AP's they have in service.

AP = Access Point. It is how the school is providing their wireless service.

I would get a definitive answer on whether it is just her PC or if there are MANY other PC's that are experiencing this issue. If the latter is the case, then it is likely something with the AP firmware. If it is really just her PC and she just wants a Mac, it may just be her wireless card.

If it is more than just her, the school is obligated to fix it.

I too would recommend buying a cheap wifi USB card. Worstcase, if it does not work, return it. . .

Man! People love to bash Apple and Apple users. . .

The OP did not say the Mac users said or did ANYTHING! The OP said HIS daughter stated the people with macs do not experience her issue.

So. The Mac users, who from what we know from the information provided, did and said NOTHING but use Macs, automatically gets your imagination spinning so you can state:

Im sorry. Where did iPhone come from? You just felt like blurting that out there?

Im all for anyone writing anything that's on their mind.

But I will call you out on this stuff because it's crazy.

I mean, if the OP wrote that his daughter said the people with Sony computers do not experience her issue, im sure you would of had zero response.

Agreed.

Likely the Mac's aren't having the issue because of the chipset on their particular wireless card. But hey, lets demonize Apple! That'll solve the problem

Well, the OP's daughter has a bad Compaq, and is comparing it to Apple stuff because they believe it to be the best. Not so. I don't care.

I never had a problem with Wifi signals, and I suggested a Wireless-N card.

It seems the OP daughter's school is dominated by apple, in the following statement:

Quote:
Yes she thinks its the greatest thing ever.

I believe OP's classmates to be lying, to defend their apples. Like college kids wouldn't say it works when it does not to remain cool. Unheard of, I know.

If it is a network problem in the school, the Apple's got it too.

And?

You STILL obsessed with Apple stuff, bro? Really? (rg200amp?) You still on that?

Or, they are, because the network has the issue.

Prove it. Prove it's not Apple.

You have an issue dude!

Just because another brand of computer is not experiencing an issue, the users of that computer are liars?!?!?!?

Obsessed with Apple? I use their products and I have a sizable (and growing) stake in the company.

I have stated that countless times. But I would call you out, or anyone for that matter, for blindly hating on a product or user base unwarrantably.

Your creating a conspiracy to hate on Apple.

Her Compact laptop's wifi is not working. END OF STORY. It's ONE computer.

Macs can break too. Stop creating outrageous, unwarranted, and unsubstantiated conspiracies so you can hate on Apple.

It's just sad

No, she has a Compaq that appears to be having issues with retaining a reliable connection to the school's AP's. That doesn't make the computer bad, particularly if what she stated about other PC's, which tend to have disparate brands of wireless cards from whomever was the cheapest supplier that day, is true.

If this is indeed the case, then the SCHOOL has the issue, not her.

So your opinion is more valid then hers? She's observing her peers not having the problem, that makes their computers better than hers in her eyes. That's HER viewpoint. Your view sounds equally jaded.

Then you haven't been around enough of them.

You are white, please don't call him "bro" and then dip into ghetto slang, I'm sure he finds it as distasteful as I do.

You are outside your knowledge area here and you REALLY shouldn't be having this argument with me. I setup these networks for a living. When I say it can be a compatibility issue with a particular brand of chipset and that other chipset brands (like say those used in the Mac's) may be unaffected it is because I have experience with this........ I'm not shooting from the hip in this thread like you are.

Listen, man.. If the network has a connectivity issue, then the Compaq one may be dropping it a lot. The Wireless-N MAY do better. But the APPLE things woud have it too.

Comprende, senor?

Aww, what you got against hip-firing??

I just found an old Mid-ATX case and I may be building my own computer again. I love computer stuff, too!

That's nice that you "set this up for a living." Good for you.

No, YOU listen "man", I'm not your buddy or pal here. I have more wireless experience in the last 5 minutes than you will have in your lifetime.

You have no idea what the [censored] you are talking about, so you need to abandon this discussion while you simply look like a blathering idiot rather than a blathering idiot that doesn't know how to shut the [censored] up.

I'm also not Spanish, and neither are you, so you can stop with your ESL "man talk" too.

Who cares? What does it have to do with OP's thread? Focus, please.

LOL!

Well, all I know is that the Apple has every reason to work the same as the signal transmitted. If that gets you all mad, then, hey.. You "do this for a living." And good for you.

Like I've never set up a network before. Like I said: Good for you.

Well it definitely beats working at Burger King, living on other people's tax dollars, ruining other people's cars and eating with food stamps.
