Is it possible for a bad wireless card to connect to the network without internet? My wifes computer seems to lose internet connection when she gets to far from the router but it stays connected to the network.Get closer to the router and the net comes back. Is this possible?

IMHO, no.
How do you know it is still connected to the network? Are you accessing network based services or just looking at a connection icon?
Are you 100% the internet connectivity is related to the distance and not just a regular interruption in service?

just the icon. but i tried the ip for the router and it doesn't connect. so maybe it isn't connected to anything. Must be a bad card. If she stays in the same room as the router it is fine. As soon as she moves away it drops.
A good card can connect to the network and have a poor connection because the signal is weak and the browser times out. Have you checked the hardware settings for the wireless adapter and make sure the laptop isn't throttling/reducing power to the adapter to save battery?

Settings would be in control panel>power options>change plan settings(of the selected power plan)>change advanced power settings>wireless adapter settings>power saving mode
I would set to maximum performance for both on battery and plugged in.

1. make sure you have the latest firmware for your router and the latest wifi driver for your wife's laptop. . If it's updated, go to the device manager and uninstall it , do not delete the actual driver. Reboot. Has fixed wierd wifi problems many times for me.
2. Next thing to do is Check for malware
3. Some wifi hardware just doesn't perform well.. My experience is that ralink and atheros wifi cards are the worst.

I might suspect the router itself. We seemed to have issues with our old router...our machines would "be connected" to it, but it'd randomly have no internet for 45-60 seconds at a time. Maybe a few times a day, sometimes more, sometimes less. I replaced the router and that behavior went away, so I reckon that was it.
The wireless icon wont instantly go away
whats your signal when you have no connection but shows connected?
if you have a smart phone try using an app to check your signal strength around the house.(ex:inssider)
fork over $$$ for a new router something
if in the budget
asus RT-AC66U or similar.
if thats too rich
a small step down would be buffalo 1750dhp
I just got one and I have more signal in the
basement behind the furnace than my Linksys
e2000 had in the bedroom(main floor)
router is on second floor.it was around 50$
after BF deal discount.good price is around 100$

It is possible that the packet is so unreliable, but still considered connected that the higher level application like web browser or video just doesn't work. I've seen it pretty often.
my laptop, my cellphone and my stepsons laptop are all connected and working fine. Ordered a new wifi card through amazon, same thing. as soon as I get ten feet from the router it looses internet . Checked and set the power saving to maximum performance.
the laptop went to a "computer guy" to have a virus removed and when it came back my wife noticed the problem. I was on it and it lost connection. Move closer to the router and it picks it back up. We recently upgraded our internet speed and the phone company sent us a new modem/router combo. But the problem existed on the previous modem and linksys router too. I ordered and replaced the wifi card. with no improvement.

Did the computer "install" the replacement wireless card or did you just swap out the hardware and it didn't notice?
I ask because if just the latter, any settings pertaining to the card would have persisted. On the other hand, just going into Device Mangler and uninstalling the card, then rebooting and letting Windows reinstall it will clear and settings and may potentially work to resolve your issue.

Do you have any other wireless devices that could be interfering? I've had something similar. My printer will sometimes derp, and even though I'm not using the wifi connectivity on it, it will crash and apparently send out junk that just destroys 2.4Ghz connectivity. And then we have a soundbar that has a wireless subwoofer. If that is even plugged in, all 2.4Ghz connectivity in our living room is lost, it just interferes horrifically. Make sure you try unplugging other devices and see if that helps it.
yes it installed the drivers for the new wireless card. My laptop is sitting beside my wifes. Mine picks up better than a dozen connections. hers picks up only our 2.
as mentioned before, I went in to power manager and set the wireless adapter to maximum performance. I happened to right click on the battery icon and noticed it was set to balanced checked the high performance box and the wifi immediatly found several connections other than mine. computer restarted and now it is back where it was before.
