Troubleshooting an Internet Connection

My computer sometimes drops a connection. The little signal icon sometimes fluctuates going from 5 bars to 2 or 3, and sometimes losing the connection completely.

Is there a way to determine if the issue is my computer or the signal it's receiving? I don't have direct access to the signal thing - router? - as my apartment building provides the internet service.

Likely your PC is not close to the access point and it is also likely that being in a high density environment, there is interference. The closer you can get to the access point, the better your signal to noise ratio will be.

Which frequency band are you using, 2.4 or 5GHz? You'll likely have less interference on a 5GHz channel, but the range of 5GHz will be less.

The best solution would be to have the apartment complex put an AP in your apartment.

AP = Access Point?

There's one just outside my door, less than 20 feet from where the computer is used.

There are transmitters throughout the building. My area has two.

How do I determine the band that I'm using? I used to know that, but it was a while ago ...

Thanks

@wwillson This is the access point, yes?

Might be able to sneak a cable through the drop ceiling and get a wired connection to the AP lol.

Might be a signal quality issue with the AP getting it's signal. It would be great if you could turn off 5gHz in your modem and try 2.4gHz.

In my tiny home 2.4gHz provides a stronger and more reliable connection than 5gHz.
