How will 2024 CAFE standards impact your buying?

The irony..........., this comment of twisting "Fiat", by a Washington DC'er. Say it isn't so. More BS from a BS city/district.
I think he's joking by being sarcastic. Because there is no way anyone can actually be that dumb. So it's likely just a joke.

You will be forced to change your lifestyle....period, and it will be by Fiat, by the 25% who want you to change. Too many people are too busy living their life to fight back on the forced ultra rapid pathway to a false utopia, where none of the negatives are being look at by the religious.

And I thought Fiat was about to abandon the US market…

I don't know how 49mpg CAFE is even possible when so many people buy trucks and SUV'S. I imagine there will be some heavy pushback.

I wonder what the additional environmental impact is for all these cars that breakdown so much faster now. Sure, you get 4 more mpg now but your rings are allowing blowby, your engine is baked in carbon, or your valve train has chewed itself up.
Hybrids will get you there.

New proposed rules increase 2026 CAFE to 49 mpg in a push toward mandatory electrification. I really didn’t want to buy a new car right now when you have to pay MSRP for a very limited selection, but I may need to snag that ICE Camry before it’s too late. Is anyone else thinking about speeding up a purchase in order to snag a particular model before it goes away?

It's not a big deal as hybrids will replace ICE only.
Cost will be a factor.

My understanding is the 2021 CAFE number is 39mpg so 49mpg isnt that far off. I bet the fleet in the future will include some more hybrids and smaller turbo engines. I personally dont think an EV would work for my type of driving but would seriously consider a hybrid or plug in hybrid.

Ah the promise of the small turbo that makes 150hp/liter and uses every bit as much gas as any other engine that produces 300hp. This promise never came to fruition, especially if someone has a heavy foot. This could work is the smaller turbo also made less power but who wants that?

Going Hybrid does takes a good chunk of the "stupid" out of full blow FORCED EV adoption by religious leaders. Hybrid should also solve the almost for sure use of "forced non use/non charging" laws by religious leaders by Fiat, because the power grid is maxed out from lack of what should be new safe nuclear power plant adoption.

I am at that level, I get 15 mpg if I heavy-heavy foot it in the Minnesota winters. Less if you just take my WOT events, 4mpg??? Yet, if I road trip it on the hwy, at 70 mph/AWD I can get 36 mpg.

These new NHTSA figures will have to have hybrids as a mass, It takes a certain amount of fuel to push trucks and larger cars through the air at speed. We were very close to maxed right now. Very small trucks are in our future, or reduce our frontal area.

HUH? Actually, if every home had a Fiat, there would be no need for EVs. It's only because Americans feel the need to drive 10-15 mpg gas guzzling trucks and SUVs that spew out tons of green house gases instead of 40 mpg Fiats, that the government wants to push EVs so much.
Seriously? If yes search "rule by fiat" not capitalized as Mainia incorrectly did.

Plenty of emissions standards going back to the 1800's or before have been "forced" on Americans. This is nothing new.

I just don’t understand what is so hard to understand about CAFE? It is average, not model based. Which means manufacturer can have 15mpg vehicles on sale as long as corporate economy is 49mpg.
If manufacturer didn’t expect this than they will go bankrupt bcs. they have been part of negotiations for last two years. No one dropped this without their knowledge.

Let’s just say this rule will go away with a regime change. The entire topic is centered around politics so it’s impossible to discuss in detail and stay within the rules.

But no I’m not running out and buying something based on this.

No, it won't.
What do you think about how manufacturers design engines? By waiting for elections? The last change was ignored by manufacturers. They kept working on higher mpg vehicles regardless of what the administration did.
If there is a change in 2024, there might be a change in 2028. No serious manufacturer is going to base engineering development on a 4-year election cycle.
I am sorry, but a bunch of people will have to make up for other deficiencies by driving a hybrid.

I think they will continue to develop to the best of their ability just like they always have …

And I know more about it than you seem to give me credit for.

I really don’t have a problem with a properly executed hybrid.

I think plug-in hybrids are pretty brilliant. Why are we not seeing more large SUVs or trucks with this tech? Yes up front cost is a lot higher and they are more complex but it’s been 10 years since they became very available so they’ve figured it out by now.

Let’s not forget that under Obama, the 2025 CAFE target was 54.5mpg, or the fact that the calculation used to arrive at CAFE fuel economy is ridiculous at best. Or that a 2015 F-150 with the 2.7L ecoboost, EPA rated at 22mpg combined, was almost compliant with that 54.5mpg CAFE number.
I wanted to ask that question—is this 49mpg what we think 49mpg is?

IIRC, didn’t E85 capable vehicles only count the gasoline portion, thus getting nearly 7x mpg rating? hence why so many makers were making E85 compatible engines?

Back to the question: probably won’t change my car buying habits. I’ve been trying to get out of buying new, but, each year brings new “needs” and wants, so each year I evaluate what fits best. The way new car pricing is going I don’t see myself in any rush to buy new again, but the wife does like getting a new car every 10 years, so we’ll see what is available in 2031. For all I know, she won’t want one, our needs might change, etc.
