I have a stripped drain pan bolt 1/4 20 what do you think would be the best way too fix ? I was hoping for one of those self tapping bolts . Would a 1/2 20 be way too big ?

Short of putting on a new pan, which is the best way to fix it, I’d go with a Time-Sert.

What vehicle are you working on?

1/4 x 20 bolt, so I'm assuming this bolt is for the oil pan perimeter?

Are your oil pan threads stripped too?
I’ve had drain bolts(HONDA) that stripped but the pan threads were still good and all I did was install a new bolt.

Yeah, what car or light truck uses 1/4-20 for a drain (title says drain)?

And yes, 1/2‐20 is a ginormous step up.

If it's really 1/4-20, I'd run a 5/16-18 tap in there as-is. You could also go M8x1.25 if you're intercontinental and you eat French toast.

But you need to provide more info first.

You must mean the oil pan bolt, not the drain bolt? The drain bolt is 1/2 x 20. If its a bolt holding the pan on, i'd helicoil it.

A vehicle produced for two years.....feels like trolling. OEM drain plug is 1/2-20. Good luck!!

So it is an oil PAN bolt? One of many that secure the oil pan to the engine block. Nothing to do with the oil drain…
Correct?

No way a 1/2” self tapping plug is going into a 1/2” hole.

Have you been able to get the rest of the Bolt out? If not use a tool to back it out then time cert or re-tap.
