How thirsty MSFT is for my documents

I think the main reason is they want money, if you pay them to store the files, then they get a monthly sub until you die. The accounting people love to see all this money and monthly subs come in.

I have a few family members use google/OneDrive, and the good thing is if your whole house burns/flood, your documents are recoverable.

These tools provide convivence to the end user.

Most people don't want to take the time to build their own servers or do everything manually with flash drives.

There already scraped into their generative AI model as you type them likely anyway. Welcome to the borg.
It depends. My employers always sign up for a plan that they do not allow any info to be feed back into the AI training. It is a commercial plan obviously and it is not the "free trial" consumer products that make money off you somewhere else (mostly advertising elsewhere). We can use ChatGPT at work only through a special portal / site, and nothing gets sent to training.

Most people don't value insurance until they need them.

I don't use these online storage / backup plans, but I always periodically backup my data / documents on a hard drive and store them off site as a disaster recovery backup (family homes). I know a few people who lost all their family photos since birth because of house fire.
