How much are you guys paying for wheel alignment?

Here in N.J. the wholesales price is $40.00 Another shop charges $50.00 wholesale and they are both great shops but as you may have figured out the $40.00 is a lot busier

$40 to $45 here.

Get it done every time I return from a visit back to Wisconsin where I am from.

Roads there are in real bad condition even though they have one of the highest gas taxes in the country.

What these guys said.

If you have a Firestone Complete Auto Care near you, their lifetime alignment package is a great deal. I paid $140/each and got the package for both of our cars when I bought them. I get them aligned every spring and Firestone seems to really know what they're doing. The one that I go to provides a fancy, color printout with all the specs before and after.

Unless you're the worst parallel parker ever or you're the type who always bangs the rear right wheel into the curb when turning into a driveway, is there a reason to align the rear?

Have an indy shop that charges about $160. Went to a string of chain shops but they were completely clueless how to align a BMW. Huge waste of time! This is the one job I'm willing to pay retail for.

I prefer to use shops that have Hunter alignment racks.

Too bad that doesn't guarantee a good alignment. I've been to different shops, all with Hunter machines and most of them don't know how to use it properly. Most will give different numbers.

The franchise stores/shops always scare me. They pay them pennies and the commission doesn't start til $3000-$4000 ticket sales before they get the 10% cut. It just promotes unnecessary repairs. A shop specializing in alignments/frame straightening seems logical to me even though they may be a bit higher priced.

+2

Over the years I've taken many vehicles to Firestone for alignment. They have always done a great job.

They aligned our Explorer at 45,000 miles and it now has 103,000 miles. It still has the same set of tires and they are wearing perfectly. It wasn't even the lifetime alignment, I think I paid $60 or $70 for the one-time alignment and haven't had to go back since.

I believe my last alignment cost me $110. This was at Black's Tire, with the "laser" alignment machine.

I have had one aligned before, for $40. That was on a old machine that used the lights aimed at the wall.

These were both within the past 3-4 years.

Les Schwab charges 56.25 for a thrust angle and 83.50 for a 4-wheel. They are one of the few places that don't rip you a big one when it comes to alignment. Plus, they actually have high quality equipment and well-trained employees.

Good point his vans only needed thrust angle. My needed all 4 aligned.

What does Pep Boys use? Is it standard across all stores?

Yes, they use John Bean Company's Visualiner 3D.

That's true, but I just have a personal preference in terms of equipment. Hunter's WinAlign software also helps techs do a better job if they are not familiar with the vehicle. I'm not sure if the software on the John Bean machine is as good.

Okay, forty dollars at an indie shop near work with a Hunter rack.
Only guys I've ever seen use a torque wrench to tighten lug nuts on steel rims.

I get them to check it every 6 months. I also have lifetime rotation/balance with them.

When I had my blow out and got 2 new tires, I got my alignment done at the dealer for $80 plus tax....I think it was 90 or so after they charge their "shop fees" or whatever [censored]....I was in a pinch for time and didn't want to ride around town looking for prices, since the blow out occured in part, due to an alignment problem and WM told me the alignment problem would likely "shred apart" the new tires the same way it shred the older pair if not done soon.

speed bumps and pot holes are bad for alignments too :P

Not to mention running over squirrels and armadillos unintentionally :)

Around here $90 min. to $500 for a cradle or frame alignment. Also depends if they have to add cam bolts for the alignment.
