I was pondering this today. My scraphauler friend has tracfone. He’s content buying a minute card as doesn’t use many minutes. I’m either buying a flip phone and going that route.

Nothing that archaic, but I do use Verizon Prepaid... Unlimited Talk/Txt, I forget what Data Tier I'm on, but I've never run out, with 2 Discounts ( $5 autopay, $10 "loyalty") I pay a scosche over $35/mo.
Works perfectly with my Pixel 6.

My GF (Who's 37) just Got off her Mom's VZW postpay plan (She's Been paying for her share), went with Visible (by Verizon) which Runs about $20/mo.
at the same time she switched to her own account, she upgraded to an iPhone 14 pro.

My mom had one for a while and it was a real hassle buying minutes. Sometimes the minutes didn't load correctly and I would be on the phone trying to talk to customer service to get the problem resolved. We finally had her buy an Apple iphone and her problems were over. I do not recommend buying in 30, 60, 90, and 120 slots of time. It seemed like my mom was always running out of time when she had those phones.

My friend buys a 300 minute card

I bought the original iphone SE smartphone for $150 because I wanted SMALL and I have a 500 minute monthly plan for $11 through PagePlus. Their auto load plan is painless. Shop for better plans that meet your needs. Be very careful that you pick a phone that is compatible with your prepaid plan. It works for me, a minimalist, but I could see others needing more.

I am resisting becoming a slave to my phone and letting my life revolve around it. It is a VERY useful tool but can suck you down a rabbit hole of life altering distractions.

I work at a university and we are having terribly difficult time with communications with students due to their social media preferences. They hate talking on the phone. They dislike email with a passion. For some reason, they like to set up multiple different communications platforms for different projects, events, groups, etc.. I.E., "GroupMe" is one chat platform. It makes it very difficult to keep everyone on the same page.

AT&T has a prepaid plan for $300 a year for Unlimited - Talk / Text / Data . Can you afford that ?
So, $25/month? I could do this.

Thinking of this Alcatel flipper

They're typically a better deal on a single line. A single line with unlimited can be 30 on prepaid but 60 on post paid. I have post paid because i have 5 lines.

My wife is on a year promo with Visible @ $15 a month, might switch back to Twigby after that or something cheaper that uses Verizon and wait for the next promo. Twigby taxes and fees added up for the cheapest plan.

Total wireless has been good and cheap if you have a legacy prepaid plan but Verizon ruined it if you are new or add a line. There isn’t that huge price gap between regular Verizon and total wireless now.

Most people fall for the prepaid model because they believe you're buying a certain amount of use that you get to keep until you run out.

With tracphone, you still lose what you don't use. You're just paying at the beginning of the term instead of at the end. Tracphone offers some of the most expensive minutes, texts and data in the industry. But if you only want a barebone, few calls a month type plan, the $99 365 day plan is an okay option.

Absolutely nothing they offer is a good deal, though.

Agreed. The HSN deals where they bundle a year of service with the phone are pretty good deals though, for someone that rarely uses the phone or is on Wi-Fi a lot. Yes, they have flip phones and they're eligible to be unlocked after 60 days.
