HOW MANY OF YOU DRAIN SYNTHETIC ON SHORT OCI'S?

I used to drain my Mobil 1 at the 3k mile mark - really for no good reason other than it made me sleep better at night.

Really, I did a lot of short trips in the Houston heat and felt my driving style put me into the "severe" category. Plus, the car at that time was '94 Ford Probe which ran *hot*. Used to kill plug wires every 30k miles.

I went to a 4k mile OCI about 1 year ago. Also switched to SuperTech Synthetic, as with the cost of Mobil 1 going up and with the addition of a baby boy, money got tighter here. Plus, we moved to the country (all trips are pretty much more than 10 miles) and I don't drive like a bat out of ____ like I used to.

Now that I find my time almost as precious as my money (our son is 18 months old now), I'll be going to a 5k change-out using SuperTech Synthetic 5W-30 in the 'stang and Lancer, and AMSOIL 0W-20 in our new '07 Tundra. Would like to go further, but I'm not yet comfortable with that in the Lancer or Mustang, and don't want to compromise my Tundra warranty.

I think the best oil change interval for anyone is what they feel comfortable with.

I have done it many times before going on cross country road trips, which are always over 5k miles. Since I do a vehicle check anyway, I change the oil too. Oil is much cheaper than engine and a peace of mind is priceless.

And yes, I am the type that keep cars forever.

I don't know if it is short or not, but I have a hard time leaving the oil in past 5,000 miles just for the sake of wanting to change some oil. So for the cheaper synthetics I tend to use, 5,000 miles would be about the max. I then get the fever...

Not to ____, but I can't imagine spending $5+/q on synth oil to drain it at 5000 miles when $2/q oil is guaranteed to go 5000 miles.

can one of you experts explain why I get 200k or more out of my motors with oci's b/t 4 to 7k using conventional oil, and even generic half or more of the time.

sell me some "insurance"

because most conventionals in some motors are good for 4 to 7K?

7K is about where I start "thinking" about changing the oil.

i change my syntheitcs (redline/motul mix) and filter every 1500 - 3000 miles

Oh man!!! So far you are in the lead. I think this is the shortest I've ever heard of for a synthetic OCI. Perhaps you pound on this engine a lot??? Is that why you change it often?

I got him smeared.....I change my synthetic oil every 10-15 hours of engine run time.

I have been changing at 5k for some years. I am using synthetics, now, hoping that they hold up better under turbo heat.

I used to do 5k OCIs on the turbocharged Audi 1.8T. That thing had a tiny sump, plus the turbo isn't exactly easy on the oil. Right now I'm doing 7.5k OCIs on the bimmer.

When I put synthetic in my car on my next OCI (most likely) i'll probably be changing it out between 4-5k simply because I purchased way too much during the big lots havoline closeout, and the pp bogo and I wanna use it up before it gets too old.

On my Civic, I've gone anywhere from 5,000 - 8,000 miles on oil (Mobil 1).

On my supercharged SHO, I still change it at 3,000 or less (Redline or AMSOIL). I get synthetic for this motor because it makes heat and LOTS of power, not for trying to extend OCI's.

in your case an oil sample can go a long way in determining how long your oil will last in your SHO or civic.
alot better than just guessing and changing out good clean oil.
