How Long Between Synthetic Oil Changes? (Nissan Sentra 2.0 SR)

I run Pennzoil Platinum in my 2 older Hondas and my Silverado and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum in my new Miata, all with Wix filters and I always change at or before 4,500 miles!
Why 4500? Do you really think that going to 5000 is going to hurt anything? And it’s way easier to remember.

Had you grown up with a Felician Nun standing right over your desk during Math Hour - holding a 12" Ruler, you would agree that 4500 multiplied to the next OCI, is just as easy to remember.
4500 - 9000 - 13500 - 18000......etc.

What's much tougher is knowing that those 12 inches equates to 0.000189394 of a mile and 4500 miles equates to 2.8512e+8.
63360 inches (mile) X 4500
:giggle:

You must be retired … to have that much time to make up these laundry lists…

Helpful ?

Yes.

Though I have no issue with topics that come up again and again. That’s a normal finding on a forum I’d bet.

For the year 2010 it would have been API SM, and Nissan would have assumed a basic mineral SM oil changed every 6 months. I have a similar age Nissan.

I live in a warm climate and mostly do long trips. I also run full synthetic Euro rated oils. For my last oil change on Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40 A3/B4 (Shell Helix version), I went 8k miles and 22 months. I regularly checked my level and topped up as required.

No one size fits all solution, it depends on your climate, driving habits, engine type and oil quality.

For me Nissan said to use a 5W30 mineral oil every 6 months, instead I used a 5W40 Euro full synthetic with MB 229.5 and Porsche A40 OEM specs and went longer in time. But I think the miles and fuel burnt are more important for oil change interval. I still changed at a reasonable 8k miles.

If it's a B15 1.8L Sentra with a 2.9qt oil capacity, or a 1st gen 3.3L Xterra with 3.5qt oil capacity, or any generation VQ engine, then I do 3000 miles or 6 months.

Excellent point, about the small sump on some Nissan's.

I had a B15 with the 1.8, and while it didn't burn any oil early in its life, when I handed off the car to my son, I pounded into his head the need to check the level regularly. At 100k, 90% hard city miles, it was burning a little. We sold the car at this point, and I tried to explain to the new owner about the small sump, and need to check the oil regularly. This was met with a blank stare. I wonder how many of those engines get destroyed by inattentive owners?

The engineers that decided to use a 2.9 quart capacity should not be working in the automotive industry. Such a dumb idea to have the capacity so small that when it is down a quart that means it’s missing 33% of the oil 😳
They could have at least had some sort of level sensor that triggered a warning on the dash when it got to a half quart low.

My 2.5L Nissan X-trail (Rogue) takes a full 5L (4.4 quart) jug for an oil and filter change. That's convenient. The official Nissan OCI for my car is 6k miles or 6 months.

For comparison, some of the newer Mercedes Benz take 7L to 9L ( 6-8 quart) oil capacity. They also push the OCI up to something like 10k to 15k miles. With a year being their time limit.

Because dropping 40 threads isn't annoying at all. A simple oci recommendation is a lot easier.

I change my oil at 10K for those cars driven in town and some on the interstate. Me and my wife commute 800-2000 miles a month and I change ours every 15K. UOA's clearly show I am not "abusing" my engines. Our fleet of four cars has a total 925,000 miles. No engine has every been replaced or rebuilt. Worse thing are two front main seals needing replacement. All have original transmissions as well.

You change your oil at 10k.
But you change your wife's oil at 15k.

My wife would demand equal treatment (10k). You must be a great husband otherwise.
