Pointless oil changes?

I would buy a pail of 15W40, see what happens to the consumption? I think there 100's of thousands of those running that in mexico and central America.

My guess is that he lives in a place that doesn’t have emission standards. While I appreciate the goal of getting to 500k, if the car is actually “using” oil (blow-by) and not simply “dripping” it (bad seals), then yes we’d all be better off with this thing off the road.

Some years ago, I bought a 89 Hyundai for $75
It needed some work, a young kid from work had it and couldn’t get a salvage yard to come pocknit up for free. He said they wanted 75 to haul it off.

So I thought would tinker with it and flip it for a few hundred. It had 265k, burned and leaked oil at an astonishing rate. I think it would consume a quart in 650 miles.

I drove that POS for two years in Tampa to work. I never did change the oil. I drove it about 350 miles a week. I just kept filling with the cheapest oil I could find.

After two years, the transmission gave up.

So yes…….. sometimes it’s just fine to just keep adding oil
