How important is good oil "flow"?

Oil filters do matter . It will not make a whole lot of difference which one you use just so it doesn't fail. Read up which filters the million mile vehicles use.
 
Yeah but how often do you push your engine? I try to drive normal most of the time so that I get better gas mileage. I only push it when its really needed, which isn't often.

in my experience with my heavy high speed diesel engines - Series 60 Detroits #500hp and 1800rpm - good flow is essential to engine health and reduced maintenance costs

After millions of kms testing I settled on SS 40micro cleanable FF inserts and a Mann-Hummel centrifuge for all engines. This enabled 90kkms OCIs with ease using a suitably quality 5W-40 synthetic HDEO

To me the best flow possible is a sure way to better engine durability
 
spector, you are right on!!!!our founder agreed with that statemen...if you think about it commonsense says at least to me you are going to puch thick oil through a paper filter!!!i don't think so..its a cheap idea sold to the public...imho
 
was at ford fest at bandimere race tract...drag racing of all kinds...blue oval ford performance was there and they are pushing wider outlets on oil filters for a alot faster flow on the FL1A motorcraft filter..or to use a high quality stainless steel filter such as k&p engineering.. there shop is right next to theirs..they weren't selling k&p but just made a comment what our engines need need higher flow for best protection..in a combustion engine a high oil flow is far the most important...they do rousch's ford engines and open to public for upgrades etc...told them i use k&p stainless in my fords and they said that was a superior filter for high flows which those engines need and good filtration that is stable and consistant....we have seen the engines using these filters.awesome!!also the paper filters especially the FL1A with a new lager oil exit hole for higher oil flow..
 
Flow should take priority. Insufficient pressure will grenade a motor quickly. A bit of contamination *might* *slowly* damage the motor. But like everything in life, it's a compromise between the two.

Any filtration method built on a friction based model has to, by design, have that particular compromise for any given set of parameters.

The question becomes, what breakpoints are necessary for each factor for your application. Are you racing for 5 seconds, and breaking down the engine between runs? Or are you a passenger car that drives primarily 20 mile runs at 70 miles per hour?

Its the obvious response, but in a culture of 'bests' it is also the needed one.
 
Alright thanks for all the info everyone. So which "off the shelf" oil filter should I use then? Someone said the Royal Purple oil filters flow well, but then someone else was saying K&P. There are a lot of varying opinions here.
 
royal purple is a paper filter and is in no way anything like a stainless fliter..remember stainless steel flows 57gpm.@ 1 psid..i don't know what they rate royal purple at the wix is 10=12 gpm but at a 8 psid...keep in mind that a filter has to have some room to flow so i feel a 30-35u absolute would do the job..

Royal Purple filters use a glass media, kind of like the Donaldson Synteq media. They're not paper...

The Amsoil EaO, Royal Purple, Donaldson SYNTEQ, Fleetguard Stratapore, FRAM Extended Guard and AC Delco UPF filters are all glass media variants, with all but the FRAM being close to identical in media construction. They are NOT PAPER.

As others have mentioned, the RP filter is a synthetic glass media. The 820 variant of the RP filter is 2 psid at 12 gpm. So, while it doesn't flow like a stainless filter, it does offer much better flow than paper filters, and even better flow than the synthetic/cellulose blends--with the benefit of very fine filtration. I think it's a hard filter to beat. If the one for my application had the bypass in the base, that's what I'd be using.

There's a fleetguard Stratapore for that app that is quite inexpensive..... I've used them in the Expedition in the past. Of course the problem is the dome-end bypass and nitrile ADBV.
 
i saw the royal purple filters and the flow tube small holes and inlet holes small in no way that this filter flow fast...i don't buy it...i do not believe 2 psid @ 12 gpm...

That's the data provided to me by RP for the filter for my application. So, either they're lying about the data, or your eyeball flow meter isn't as well-calibrated as you think. Given what I know about fluid dynamics, and the repeatability of standardized SAE tests, my money is on the latter. I simply do not believe that the inlet holes of any (non-defective) filter are the limiting factor for flow.
