How does filter last through a Oil Life Monitor

Ok, so I change my oil, then top off a few quarts until the light says it's time to change the oil. What is happening to the poor filter going 6-8k miles? GM says there's no need to replace it until the oil change, so are the industry standards the filters meet set to take that amount of miles and the junk in the oil they filter?

And if so, then why the special filters that say they're made for 7500 miles or more?

That's probably just some marekting ploy to get you to buy a more expensive filter. The basic OEM filter for my 530i is expected to go 15K miles. Most other german car filters are rated for up to 30K km or 2 years.

A filter's job is really not that difficult, unless your engine has problems.
 
Honda tiny oil filter can lasted 2 OCI's of about 10k miles each, for a total up to 20k miles.

When I changed oil filter of my E430 after 12-13k miles, the cartridge oil filter doesn't much anything on it, it looks like it can be used for another OCI of 12-13k miles.
 
A worn engine often dumps a large amount of soot in the oil from blowby and will load the filter up with soot in 2000 miles or less. The engine in good condition should keep the oil soot levels down and the filter useable for much longer.You could weigh a new unused filter then weigh your used filter after it has drained overnight.The difference in weights should provide a figure on the amount of soot trapped.Now, find someone who knows the max. amt. of soot your particular filter type can hold before replacement is needed.Now,I will 'take something' and lye down.

Silicone ADBV, dirt holding capacity (that one is debatable).
 
Cutting open the filter over a period of time can give you an idea of how long your filter could have gone.

You can tell by how clogged the media is if its bad or not. If you blew a hole in the media because it was so clogged up and needed the pressure relief you know you went too far.
 
Warm up cycles. It's that simple. A filter will last so many warm up cycles (MOST ENGINES) Some users put NO miles between warm up cycles. Some users put a TON of miles between warm up cycles. Some put SOME miles between warm up cycles.

The GM OLM sees them all. Others? Using an OEM filter ..follow OEM recommendations. That may include "every other" oil change ..since that car will be putting ......TONS of miles between warm up cycles.

Moisture for one,,short drives "cycles" are hard on oil and filters because the oil can't reach op temp and burn off any moisture in the oil,moisture in filter media = wavy /weak pleats search the filter forum and read lots of pics too.
