How do you know when it's time to use an additive?

I'm trying to free up / clean up the gas gauge on my Silverado so knowing what time was pretty clear (if not tto late). So I dumped some B-12 in their at 1oz/gal. We'll see.

Which one are you using? I like to add something with PEA every OCI or every second OCI if I forget. I get the Red Line and should be using the maintenance doses, which would make things much easier. I do use Top Tier, so I'm not terribly worried anyhow.

I'm not using anything right now. The engine doesn't idle whisper smooth
like it used to, so I'm wondering if I should pour something in there.

FP60 Plus gets used every fill up or at least every other.

What happens if you stop using it?

Well, can't hurt to try some Red Line or Techron or something. Aside from that, the other suggestions elsewhere make sense. Be sure there are no vacuum leaks, either.

Don't do it; UNLESS, you are not using the vehicle for a few months: Then use a stabilizer.

Everything you need is already mixed in with modern fuels, especially if sourced from a major brand.

The way I do it is I reset my MPG calculator by resetting my Trip to zero everytime I fill up, so I always know the ballpark MPG I should get.

When I see my MPG start to deteriorate beyond my norm, I dump in a bottle of Gumout Fuel Injection Cleaner that I stock up on when it is on sale.

That usually fully restores my MPG as Montreal fuel is filthy and clogs the injectors.

If your injectors aren't atomizing properly, kiss your MPG goodbye.

Then before each oil change, I nail the car first with a bottle of Gumout FI Cleaner again, then a bottle of Gumout Regane High Mileage on the second tank. Third tank is untreated, then I do an oil change.

That is about all you can really do effectively with additives.

If you're using E10 I doubt you need any additives as the ethanol will clean your fuel system. Last time I put a fuel additive in my tank was in 1990, and I've never had any problem since then. Stabil for storage of course...

I have a car I drive 1-2x/week. It may take 2-3 months to burn a tank of gas. I use stabil in this car.

Other than that, I never use additives.

I use a fuel additive before each oil change(Redline SI-1) just for preventative reasons, but I have used additives to address problems before. In regards to your question; use an additive if the idle is "rough", there is light ping(possibly carbon knock), or in my case as preventative maintenance.

I use fuel additives if I buy a used car. Especially if there are signs of neglect. I may run a bottle of techron through the fuel system every other oil change though just to help keep things clean, and if I can get techron on sale or bogo.
