How do I drain the oil from this riding mower?

Notice how the drain plug sits low and several inches back from the frame. Seems that's either a huge oversight or there's a trick I'm missing (or both I suppose!). Can I get specific insight?

Get a slightly curved piece of plastic long enough to reach your drain pan. Place it under the plug and drain. It will still be messy but less so.

aluminum foil works well for this. Park it on a hill or jack up the opposite side to help direct the oil over the frame and into a container.

Google engine drain pipe for ideas how to make the task easier.

Install an oil drain plug...

Either get one from a scrap lawn tractor, or buy new...

Are you having a problem getting the plug out? If so you can buy a special socket to fit that male pipe plug. Or, you can use a 12 point socket. For a 3/8” square you use a 7/16” 12 point socket. For a 1/2” square you use a 5/8” 12 point socket. Fashion a water bottle to get the used oil into your drain pan.

It looks as if you already have a newspaper under it to catch some of the residual oil. You’re on the right track. My generator and pressure washer drains are similar. I put a small quart size plastic container under mine then clean up with an old Tee shirt and carb cleaner afterward.

I thought that was a good idea too...until vibration SNAPED that extended drain right off!!

Are you sure that's the only drain plug? A lot of mower engines will also have a drain plug on the bottom of the engine. It can be accessed from the under side of the deck.

I’ve never seen one to snap off. I suppose it could. A lot of older kohler commands were sit-up like this picture, as this one is.

Looks like a great excuse to buy an oil extractor. They’re awesome for small engines.

Jack up the mower to tilt it so that all the oil runs to the other side of the engine.
Remove the plug and temporarily thread a pipe nipple into the hole.
Lower the jack and let the old oil drain out through the pipe.
Remove pipe and replace plug.

Similar stupid design on Husqvarna with Kohler.
Tilt mower as described, short piece of pipe, and a quarter turn valve for steam was my solution.
The original plug went into the outlet on the valve.
