BLUF: thinking about trading in my 19 month old Lexus IS 350C for a 1994 Jag XJS 4L vert.

With renters moving out of a house in ALA that we couldn't sell when we moved duty stations, money is about to get really tight. I've been thinking about doing this for a bit but didn't have a real reason to do so until now.

Here's the deal. Trade in my 2010 IS for a 1994 Jag with 88k miles from a dealer that has a good rep. Upside - no car payment and 800 bucks a month back into the useful budget.

The car is listed for $8k. I know I could get an accord or toyota but I wouldn't have as much fun driving - gotten used to power and convertibles.

SO How Crazy Am I?

Just put away some money for repairs.

I would say about an 8 on a scale of 1-10.

Seriously though, I have my daily transportation and I have my toys. I try not to confuse the two.

How crazy are you?

Certifiably insane - old Jaguars do NOT make reliable daily drivers!!!

Stick with the Lexus!

If you have another car for when the Jag is in the shop, it may not be so insane.

Otherwise, yeah an 8 on the scale of 1-10.

If you like working on cars as a hobby and have alternate transportation, then go for it. Older British cars are hobbies, not daily transportation.

Go with the thought of trading down to Accord/Camry and have paid for, reliable transportation. Your bank account (and wife) will be much happier.

And the downside is that you may need to put that 800 bucks into Jag repairs every month to keep it on the road.

You're trading an appliance for a much more interesting, collectible, and fun-to-drive car. Insane? Depends on your definition.

That's what my mind was telling me - ie 11/10. So what would be a good under $10K car that reliable and also a little fun? Is there such a beast?

The XJS is sure pretty IMO much easier on the eyes than the high priced Lexus.

I don't know about crazy but i would find a cheap older Toyota to fill in for the times the Jag is down which could be more often than you would like.A good old Jag can be a minor PITA a bad one can nickel and dime you death.
Before committing to the Jag have someone who really knows them inside and out go right through it.

Lot to think about.

Mazda3 2.3 with manual trans?

Don't forget the environment! That Jag is going to give you way more smiles per gallon than the Lexus*. Think of our children's future and don't drive beige.

*at least the miles it covers under its own power

You know, $800/month can cover a LOT of repairs. Even on an old Jag. This is looking saner the more I look at it... of course I love older Jags and am not impressed Toyotas of any sort, so there is a built-in bias.

:-p

Unless you actually enjoy repairing it and can live without that car being driveable for long periods of time, don't do it.

Don't know. I have heard a lot of scary stories about Jag's.

Being a BIG fan of Dave Ramsey I would advocate paying cash for whatever you get. Car payments are one of the leading reasons for a lack of individual financial growth in America.

I'd prefer something reliable over something cool. I know that isn't fun, but my paid off car beats something cool with a monthly payment 7 days a week.

That $800 for repairs won't last as long as a Jag as it would some other cars.
Just think carefully about any decision you make. And have walk away power when you negotiate. Cash is king, use it to reach a win-win situation with the sales person. You have the ability to negotiate... use it.
