How come the 350 chevy is still made?

GM 305's can't breathe...Smaller bore than a 283. I always found such comparisons to be silly as not many are going to sink money into a 305.
It's like doing a 5.7 LS1 vs a 2V 4.6L Modular comparison.

I hear you, but it did OK for ancient tech. Decent torque via long stroke

That was better than the average comparison. At least they used a dual pattern cam. Pretty sure that motor had E7 heads which are not fantastic.

Yeah, that engine would have had E7TE's (and those were not the OE "header" style manifolds either, but that doesn't matter because of the long tubes they eventually put on it). As you note, the E7TE's aren't great, they are from the 1987 truck parts bin and ended up on the 302HO as well.
