2001 nissan xterra, 82000 miles, 6 cylinder, 3.5 qt capacity.
I usually do a 5K oil change using Mobil 1 10w30 full synthetic.
This time, to avoid a change in the winter, I am using Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30. I figure I'll have 8000 miles when winter is over. This is the wifes truck, and routine is as follows.
Start truck in morning to warm up about 3 minutes, driven 2 miles to drop off daughter at school, shut down for 5 min. Get back in, start, drive 2 miles home. Shut down for 1 hour until she goes to work, about 6 mile drive. Sits for 5 hrs, driven 6 miles, pick up daughter. SHut down for 5 minutes again. Then, drive 15 miles highway, shut down for 5 minutes, driven 15 miles home again.
How bad is this for the oil? The truck also sees additional driving, that is just her schedule M-F, not including additional trips.
What does everyone think?

Now this is what I would consider severe service at its best. I would stick with the 5K interval at that service, or if you want to try and get 7 or 8K out of it, take the car out every weekend and get it up to temperature on the highway, like 30 minutes of driving or so.

I think that the highway part of the routine corrects most of the insult of the short trips. If I added correctly, she does about 45-50 miles per day standard ..with other errands/events added to it. This tracks out to over 12k a year.

I would think 6 months (Spring and Fall) would work well for this service. The mileage is borderline for either a synthetic and conventional. Since you're already on the synthetic bandwagon ..stay with it.

I don't think you need EP for this type of service.
 
In that truck we do about 17-18K a year. I'm just trying see what the experts think about her schedule, and to see if I can go the winter without a change. I'll be back at the 5K change after winter, with reg m1, not EP, due to the 3.5 quart capacity.
Oh yea, forogt to mention pure 1 filter is used.

Sounds like my wife's routine - except hers is more random......

I would be a bit more worried if you didn't have the two fifteen milers at the end (what are they for? - I got lost), Those hwy miles should drive all the moisture out of the oil.

Thats what I figured, and am hoping. The 2 15 mile drives are to go get my son, who I drop off in the am, from my parents, and then 15 miles back home. I think it should be ok, and may do a used oil analysis after winter. If it held up good, maybe I will go further than the 5k I have been doing.

The 3 minute warm up might be shortened. Startup and start driving sooner. It warms up better while moving, just take it easy.
 
It's pretty cold, ranging from 0-15 degrees outside, sometime below zero here. Even in summer, I like to give at least 30sec-1min warmup. I'm not sure how bad this is........

Bad gas mileage, can affect catalytic converter.
 
hi i think this is pretty typical of city/suburbs lifestyle and family use probably classified as severe service intervals, just keep up regular OCI and you should be fine....

Doesn't sound too severe.
What are your coolant temp readings? What are the driving conditions?

Well thats the issue. Severe service is 3750 miles, and I will be at approx 8000 miles at the end of this OCI. Truck only holds 3.5qts. So with my situation, Im trying to come to an educated conclusion. I wouldnt be worried if I was changing when stated at 3750 by NIssan. Trying to avoid climbing under the trucks this winter. I'm going for it, and will do a used oil analysis after this winter on the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30.
Oh, maybe should have mentioned this is the "katrina" blend Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30 I will be(have been) testing.
 
To my knowledge, Katrina and the other hurricanes haven't effected the lube oils yet. Gasoline might be a different story, but so far so good in my neck of the woods.

You might want to consider car-pooling since most other urban drivers don't even think about their oil.
 
Have you tried something like Lube Control to fight the acid and moisture in the crankcase? Maybe your situation would call for a little stronger dose than uaual. Maybe 2 ounces every thousand miles. You could pass an oil sample to Terry Dyson and get an exact doseage and at least know for sure what's going on with the engine oil. The cost won't be wasted because the pattern you develop can apply to any new car in the future. Sometimes lab results and analysis are better than speculation.
 
Two 15 mile trips at the end of the day will help a lot and I think you should run the EP all winter and then do a used oil analysis and it should be fine or adjust from the analysis. One longer OCI on Mobil 1 Extended Performance will not shorten the life of this vehicle at all.
 
Rather idle a few minutes, than entering the high speed-traffic with a cold engine. The coolant temp reaches 140 deg. F within 5-6 minutes of idle. I do not speak about low idle, but 1400-1500 rpm. Remember to turn off the heater. Engine idle should absolutely not be used to warm up the interior. Doing this is like trying to warm up an engine with a broken thermostat.

You will see that it takes the double time to warm up the engine if it runs at low idle + you are "trying" to "heat" the interior with the cold coolant, or say cooling the cold coolant with the freeze air - Thanks.

No thanks. That may work for you, but wouldnt for me. I dont think the the engine would like no warm up either. My trucks arent loud, cant even hear them running. And the air? I'm going to sit in traffic for an hour for a ride that should take 20min. I dont think the little warm up time is the issue for air pollution. Talk to me about traffic and big corporations, and I'd tend to agree more.
