Hour Meter

Has anyone installed a hour meter on their car to track in addition to the mileage? Sometimes in the summer/winter I let my truck idle a lot so when I get in, the truck is already cool/warm. Or if your car has an hour meter in the computer do you track it in relation to your mileage for OCI and maintenance purposes?

I've seen some that are pretty cheap and the only required connection is to wrap a wire around one of the spark plug wires.

Any thoughts?

I have one on my lawn mower. I also have one on my truck that's already built in. typically you're supposed to change the oil every 200-250hrs on a car. The one on my lawn mower is 25 bucks and made by briggs and stratton. It works great! There is a red wire you wrap around the spark plug wire and one ground wire that you put under a bolt. You have to make sure it will work on a vehicle with multiple cylinders otherwise the time may not be accurate.

I could see the RPMs being off if it picks up more sparks "accidentally" through inductance, but if it measures one wire, wouldn't it just report RPM for one wire even on a V8?

If it counts any RPMs per second toward the hour meter, when it's still, it's still, moving, moving.

Kind of a 1/2 way factory oil monitor system.
Boat or truck supply stores should offer choices.

For me, I'd spend the money on an extra oil change here and there.
