Hot Water Heater Price Shock

Make sure any quotes lists every single part provided and the exact model number. Some outfits provide vague quotes, and then start to charge additional for valves, etc... saying they were not part of the quote....
If someone charged me 2k to install a hot water heater then started adding in shop supplies, I would knock them out.

I just got a highly rated plumber
and he did say things are hard to get but he will install my hybrid heater and supply everything required and cap off the LP and vent and remove the old unit for $350.

He will go to Home Depot and picked it up as well. Has 5 star ratings and is only 7 miles away.

Tip time.... No BS. And he supplies a written warranty on his work.
If he works out he will be my go too guy.

3 of these jobs in a day and he clears a grand.....I'm in the wrong business

And he is cheap
Plus he gets a disposal fee for each old one.
That's a decent price. When I had a regular plumber, he used to charge me $150-$250 per water heater depending on how badly he needed the money. The scrap value of an old water heater is probably in the $10-$30 range so after you factor in the time and gas, probably losing money getting rid of it.

One other plumber I used to use was about $250 a water heater but then started adopting the current model where he'd just slam you with the flat rate $1500-$2000 installed price. Last time I was able to just convince them to do the normal time and material price and that I didn't want the flat rate pricing. Must be in some industry publication that this is the way now to make money, have a high flat rate price.

In MD. they get $50 for a old wh.
I told him he could leave the old one behind but he wanted it...

I'm happy with the deal.
But they are making great money too.

I get the feeling the $2k guys want to do 2 installs a month and party.

Are you sure that's the current price? When it was that high, you'd have guys driving around just looking for scrap metal. But the price of scrap has really gone down, used to be in the 600 a ton range now in the 100 range. So all those guys are gone now, can't even pay for gas just driving around. So you get about 6 cents a pound and a hot water heater is about 150 pounds so it's more like $10.

Now that my anxiety just kicked up a click or two over this thread, my ~15yr/old GE 40 gal tall natural gas fired unit will start peeing on the floor. FWIW, 40gal is more than enough for most in our house.
Electric takes longer than gas so you need a larger tank for electric.

That is a local utility paying the $50 to upgrade old appliances and not a
scrap buyer.

Ouch. That does seem high. Im guessing something like that would list for around $2000.

I need to get a Rheem hybrid water heater for our house. Either 40 or 50 gallon. I think they’re around $1400 at Home Depot.

Houses don't use water people do :) Install two smaller ones. Two Electric 30 gallon units are under $900- If that ain't enough People need schooling. I have a Tankless coil in my Oil fired Boiler. Endless hot water; Even with 45 degrees drilled well water feed !
You don't know how to solder pipes? Plumbers and contractors are nuts with their fees typically$ 300/ hour.
I will ignore them at that cost.

I just read you got it done at a reasonable cost. I glad you weren't a sucker for the "Housewife" quote :)

Jesse on The Dukes of Hazzard said hot water heater. That’s the first time I heard it. I can remember that but not where I left my car keys, which are in my pocket.
I haven’t seen any increase in water heater prices, regular ng water heaters, for a couple years, maybe even a little less from HD. They have been high for quite some time. The installs though is a different story. The elderly are big targets.
