Hot Water Heater Price Shock

Did you try Home Depot? They also install. Their prices are also high, but not as high as you're getting quoted.
Yes you are right and I did.
They were $800 cheaper on the Hybrid install.
Wanted to do a 50 gallon electric with a booster and a pan and safety switch for $2000 for a 6 year unit.
I got educated on the booster unit.
So far they were the cheapest.

Definitely DIY time. Usually it's all flex lines going to the tank anyway.

I have had to lower my prices back to the 90's rates due to increased foreign competition. Meaning they knocked off all of my stuff.

That said I think hvac and water heaters and the like are the new gold standard. Plus all the crap last only 10 years these days.

I agree with you. $2000 to install a water heater. DIY time.
You replace the anode rod. I've mentioned it a few times. I think I got close to 20 years on one water heater by replacing the rod. Just did a second batch of rods.

Now my electric company gives a $700 rebate on the 80 gallon Hybrid and the Feds give $300 more. Helps a bit.

That 80 gallon hybrid used to be $1000 when they first came out. And they had $1000 in rebates so it was basically free, just had to pay for install. Now the price is way up....

I know there's towns near me that don't allow for DIY water heater replacement. Thankfully I don't live in one.

Now that my anxiety just kicked up a click or two over this thread, my ~15yr/old GE 40 gal tall natural gas fired unit will start peeing on the floor. FWIW, 40gal is more than enough for most in our house. Bride complains from time to time. I always say too bad. We're on a nearly 50 year old septic system so turn the faucet off! LOL

Thank you very much for bringing this up. LOL

I usually buy them from Home Depot and the plumber I know charge $500 flat rate to install it about 5 years ago, including haul away.
Sears was my go to.
Went under and it seems everyone is now fleecing. It would be interesting if your guy is now wise to the pricing.

The last water heater I needed was 15 years ago. My Plumber buddy hooked me up with a new but used 40 gal for $150 installed. Took his guy about 20 minutes.
Yeah ain't that neat.
The Sears guy was a loafer and he was reaming me for replacing a 17 year old unit. Even with all of that he took 45 minutes. I guess he is charging $2000 now too...lol

Not sure what that means by "fleecing". Labor is expensive here so we do what we can like buying and hauling home from Home Depot, we also buy higher end longer warranty one. $500 is actually cheap compare to others who charge 1k for labor doing everything for you.

Looks like many are charging $2000 nowadays for an install. Nuts.
I used to do everything myself but these days I can no longer or I would.
Nothing better than DIY

If you haven't, shop around - a lot. Replaced our water heater last year. 3 Quotes - $1200, $1800, and $3950. All for the exact same unit...
I hear ya, but that was last year. I wouldn't be surprised if those prices are almost double now.

This isn't about being a cheapskate.
These install rates are crazy.
Plus these guys are making money on the units too.

They deserve to be paid but not a couple grand for this kind of job.

Perhaps I should put it this way - I got three bids. The one I took, one 50% higher, and another 330% higher. All were for the same unit for my install (standard atmospheric vent natural gas 50 gallon with 10+year warranty) - not what the OP is having installed.

Regardless of whether prices went up, shop around - all three were reputable companies, but 330% higher for the exact same unit (name brand, type, etc...) is crazy...

And no, I'm not complaining about the the going cost of having a skilled trade provide their services. In this case I weighed the cost of DIY (which I am capable of) versus the convenience of calling up a company, having them pull the permit, install it the same day, and haul away the old unit, all while I was still able to do my day job...

Avoid water heaters from A.O.Smith?

https://gopaschal.com/water-heater-prices-heating-up-in-2021/

A. O. Smith Corp. said it is boosting [water heater] prices starting in August following higher material costs.
The company said in a securities filing that it is generally going to raise prices by the low double digits on a majority of its commercial and residential water heater products and services. This will affect parts of the U.S.
The company said the increases is due to higher material costs and specifically mentioned increasing transportation costs and the accelerating cost of steel. The latest increase will put A.O. Smith costs at a 36% increase this year.

The water heater division of Rheem Sales Company, Inc. has announced price increases of 10-12% on Rheem Tank Water Heaters. The company has made several price increase announcements this year, including the air conditioning manufacturing arm of the company.

In a letter addressed to Bradford White customers, VP of Sales Matt Kozak has announced a price increase on the behalf of the company.
...."the global pandemic has continued to affect the worldwide markets. At Bradford White, we have continued to absorb significant additional cost increases in steel, freight, and other commodities used in the manufacture of water heaters. After detailed analysis and careful consideration, we have come to the determination that we will be implementing the following, additional price increase, effective with orders received at Bradford White beginning March 29, 2021.:
Residential Products (Gas and Electric Tank Type) 9%

I just talked to a guy and his well pump went out last week and he got bids at $6000.
He found a licensed plumper the next state over that did the job for $2000. And not a relative etc.

I think on the rebate equipment the
plumbers know you are getting it and they are padding the price thinking you're still thinking you are getting a deep discount.

Make sure any quotes lists every single part provided and the exact model number. Some outfits provide vague quotes, and then start to charge additional for valves, etc... saying they were not part of the quote....
