I’ve been buying Honey Baked ham bones for years. My wife makes ham sandwich’s, ham salad, deviled ham and for seasoning a pot of Pinto beans, Great Northern beans, Green beans, soups etc. I dropped by our local store today and requested a fresh cut ham bone and the lady went into the back room and came out with a ham bone that had been cut today. I asked if she could do a two for one deal and she said yes. So she walked over to a small chest freezer in the dining area and got one that had been cut and frozen yesterday. I bought one fresh and one frozen for $14. Total weight was just over 8 lbs which includes the bone weight which will be used for seasoning. Getting a fresh unfrozen ham bone is hit or miss but even the frozen ones are great if defrosted in the fridge for a couple of days.

I’m guessing I’ll net 4 to 5 lbs of meat between the two which is a bargain compared to their regular pricing and the bone will be used for seasoning as I stated. The only thing you can’t eat from a pig is the squeal!

We always save our ham bones (and other bones from turkey and whatnot) to make broths and soups.

I want to see if there’s one of those stores somewhere nearby, because this is a great idea for when we want a bone and a bit of meat!

So far we’ve had ham sandwiches for dinner Saturday night, and this feast for dinner last night. Slow cooked mixed beans ( pintos and great northern) cooked along with the ham bone in the pot along with collard greens, cornbread, corn on the cob and a concoction my wife came up with of spring onions, diced tomatoes and a dollop of Mayo. Yes, we both were born and raised in the South!

Your post brought back a great memory I like to tell about my late best friend Jeff...
Jeff and I went back to 8 years old, I miss him dearly and also miss giving him a hard time and he me...

Jeff kinda liked to brag about everything so one day he is telling me how great of a son-in-law he was to his x mother in law and how much she loved him. ( I knew better ) but he went on to say at Christmas he would buy a Honey Baked ham bone and take it to her... Jeff and I both were know to make a great pot of beans so seasoning with bone was nothing new.

But I thought about this for a bit and then I ask now Jeff, let me get this straight, at Christmas you would walk in to your mother-in-laws house with a big Honey Baked Ham bag and out came a bone? Not a ham but you gave her a bone?

I said yea sure Jeff, you were her favorite Son-in-Law... Walk in looking like you bringing a Ham for Christmas and out come a bone!

He got a laugh out of it too once he actually thought about it.

My mama grew up in the Low Country South Carolina and then managed a School lunch room 30 years before butter, fats and salt was removed and she taught me well...

During the winter months I slow cook a huge pot of dry beans with hock, back bone or yes a Honey Baked bone once per week.

My kids never knew growing up it was Po' Folks food as I taught them to appreciate just how special my beans and rice actually are...

Good For The Soul...

Then you know what chicken bog is…am I right?
You Bet! I grew up loving it and now we make chicken bog regularly.

You just reminded me to mark my calendar for the 47th Annual Loris South Carolina Bog-Off Festival...

This thread got my mouth watering so I called the wife and put a request in and she just walked in with a Ham Bone from Honey Baked Ham!

Guess whats for dinner tomorrow? LOL!

I wanted to update that I was impressed with my $10 Honey Baked Ham Bone! My local store only had frozen but I thawed it slow in fridge and I could not tell it was frozen.

I got a surprising amount of Ham off the bone I can use for a sandwiches this week! I used the bone and attached ham in my Dry Great Northern beens today, I used about 65% Chicken Stock to water, Cooked 7 hours in the Crock Pot today then topped over rice and BOY it hit the spot!

Thanks gman2304 for the pics and suggestions!
