Hondas are bigger than Toyotas

Here is something that is kind of crazy...

A Honda Accord is about the size of a Toyota Avalon (2022 was the last year of the Avalon):

2022 Avalon: 104+16 ft3 (passenger+cargo space)
2022 Accord: 106+17 ft3

Whereas a 2025 Honda Civic has about the same interior space as a 2025 Toyota Camry:

2025 Camry: 100+15 ft3
2025 Civic: 99+15 ft3

For reference, a 2025 Corolla has 87+13 ft3 of passenger and cargo space. Interestingly (or not), the Accord and Avalon have identical external dimensions. The Camry is a couple inches shorter and an inch narrower. And while the Civic may have similar interior capacity to a Camry, the exterior is a much smaller (shorter), and similar to a Corolla.

I think that the numbers probably don't tell the whole story, but I think it's also true that Hondas are usually a little bit bigger than the equivalent Toyota. I believe this is also true of Pilot vs Highlander, CR-V vs RAV4, and Sienna vs Odyssey. Maybe this is an intentional "second place, but we try harder" tactic by Honda.

Those numbers can be pretty meaningless. For example, I had a 2015 Hyundai Sonata and it’s rated at 106 cubic space. I sat in a 2020 which has 104, so smaller, but it was MUCH smaller inside.

Usable space is a lot different.

No experience with the Accord but my wife has owned 2 Avalons, a 2000 and a 2006. The 2006 could hold 2 bodies, a shovel, and a 50 lb bag of lime and the rear seat back would still recline!

Regional variations in body size and road conditions dictate a good or bad getaway vehicle
A 5 Sicilian trunk with rear self leveling is a good baseline IMO

I remember comparing a coworkers similar vintage Accord to my Camry, the Accord had slightly more rear leg room, but my Camry had the bigger trunk
This was several generations ago, things have probably changed since then (XV30 Camry/8th Gen Accord)
Notable exception being the new Prius, I've heard complaints about the significantly reduced cargo room

All I know is that I’m over 6’ and many Toyotas are uncomfortable for me, while most Hondas are fine.

I like driving Honda's more than I like driving Toyota's.
I haven't seen any difference in my personal cost of ownership or my personal repairs.
But I'll tell you, I like driving Nissan's even better than both of the others.

The last two generations of Accord looks small, more so the current version. The last one had that Audi swagger to it that makes look larger than it is. The latest Civic also looks big, like a 2/3rds scale Accord now.

Honda made the Accord physically bigger for the 8th gen model in 2008. It’s a full-size car per the EPA, the Camry is still a mid-size.

Cars have gotten a lot bigger in the last 25 years or so. My 1997 Honda Accord is smaller in almost every dimension than a new Civic. Ever so slightly longer, but still a shorter wheelbase. I'm 6'3" and 270 lbs. For the most part I fit fine, but leg/footwell room is a little tight for me. I think it has more to do with the design of the car than the size because I can drive my sister's 2012 Hyundai Accent, which is even smaller and I fit very comfortably.

I like driving most Honda's better than Toyota's. At least until you get about 250k miles on them. Then Toyota's are better.

Yup, kinda the reason why I drop Honda for Toyota, I didn't like how big their newer model Accord was when looking for a replacement for my old school 94 Accord LX. I really enjoy driving smaller cars than big ones. Could have settled for a Honda Fit but I went with the Yaris during my time in the market.

Also what also really swayed me away from bigger Honda cars is how overly complicated and packed the engine bay is nowadays. Just seems less mechanically simple compared to the older model year generations. A car that I can fix myself as it ages is more important than a car packed to the brim with electronic doodads I'll probably never use. Transmission options at the time was also a contributing factor.
